Our Living Language Speakers of some scattered varieties of American English sometimes use I'm instead of I've or I have in present perfect constructions, as in writing to thank you for loads of inspiration. What got me to write this letter was a little text under a photo on one of your opening pages in issue 286. It said: "No man is an island." I do not really know how many people got something out of that but I surely did. And I think that is what the person who wrote it was hoping for: "Not too many people who read this will get anything from it, but those who see the connection will be very stoked stoked adj. Slang 1. Exhilarated or excited. 2. Being or feeling high or intoxicated, especially from a drug. ." Of course I am not sure if I got the connection either.
