Contraction of I am.

Our Living Language Speakers of some scattered varieties of American English sometimes use I'm instead of I've or I have in present perfect constructions, as in
 writing to thank you for loads of inspiration. What got me to write this letter was a little text under a photo on one of your opening pages in issue 286. It said: "No man is an island." I do not really know how many people got something out of that but I surely did. And I think that is what the person who wrote it was hoping for: "Not too many people who read this will get anything from it, but those who see the connection will be very stoked stoked

." Of course I am not sure if I got the connection either. What I saw were the opening sentences of a quote in Ernest Hemingway's classic book For Whom the Bell Tolls This article may contain original research or unverified claims.
