Technology tours in U.S. and Italy highlight machine innovations.

Seeing is believing. And at SCM GROUP USA, we agree. That is why we have set up technology tours. SCM GROUP USA hosted its U.S. Tech Tours on March 21st and 22nd. To kick off this event, SCM GROUP USA also held its First Annual SCM Spring Open Golf Tournament at Chicopee Woods Golf Course in Gainesville, GA. The U.S. Tech Tours encompassed machine demos and seminars at SCM's facility in Duluth, GA, and Georgia Tech's Advanced Wood Products Laboratory. Each day concluded with a plant tour of a local SCM customer.

DAY ONE

This full day of activities began at SCM GROUP USA's facility in Duluth, GA. Machines on demo included: SCMI T160 Vanguard & T120 N shapers; SCMI S520 Nova planer; SCMI F410 Nova jointer; SCMI SI400 Vanguard sliding table saw; SCMI K201 Plus, SCMI K203ERT, SCMI K208R and SCMI S2000 edgebanders; SCMI Pratix 48 NST and Morbidelli Author 436 Top machining centers; SCMI Sandya 3/S, Sandya 5S, Sandya 15/S, and DMC Unisand sanders; SCMI 75-12 and Profile Max grinders; SCMI Compact XL and Superset XL moulders; and Routech Record 210 AL and Record 132 TVN CNC routers.

After the machine demos, customers attended educational seminars on: "How to be Profitable in Custom Moulding Applications;" "Sanding & Finishing" in conjunction with Superfici America; and "Window and Door Applications."

The demos and seminars were concluded with a visit to an SCM customer's plant, Georgia Hardwoods in Buford, GA. Georgia Hardwoods is one of the largest distributors of hardwood lumber, plywood, trim, cabinet doors and drawer boxes in the southeastern United States.

At the plant, owner Bob Dyson presented information regarding Georgia Hardwoods' use of SCM's machines in the facility. Dyson also gave SCM customers a "sneak peek" of his new plans of expansion and discussed how SCM equipment plays an essential role in his daily production needs. "SCM is the best. The people are good and they take care of us," Dyson says.

DAY TWO

Tour participants began their day at Georgia Tech's Advanced Wood Products Laboratory (AWPL) participating in machine demonstrations on some of SCM's more advanced technology machines. Demos were conducted on the following machines: DMC Unisand and Unisand K sanding machines; SCMI 75-12 and Profile Max 300 grinders; SCMI M3 gang rip saw; SCMI Superset XL Elite moulder; Routech Ergon and Chronos 1--CNC routers/machining centers; and Morbidelli Author 667 Top and Author 427 S point-to-point machines.

Seminars also were conducted in a classroom setting during the machine demos on the following topics: "CNC Tooling Performance" and "Screen-to-Machine," which was held in conjunction with Planit Solutions.

The SCM U.S. Technology Tours were concluded with a plant visit to Leeman Architectural Woodwork in Powder Springs, GA. Since 1988, Leeman Architectural Woodwork has emerged as a premier supplier of quality retail store fixtures, point of purchase displays, institutional casework and high-end millwork to customers nationwide. The company has a fully automated 350,000-square-foot facility, equipped with the latest CNC technology.

Owner Gary Leeman conducted the tour of the facility, in which SCM equipment makes up approximately 95 percent of the machinery--and is a vital part of Leeman's production plans.
