Technology and The News: The Dallas Morning News Taps TriActive to Enhance IT Operations.

Business Editors & High Tech Writers

AUSTIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2001

In the fast-paced world of a major metropolitan daily newspaper, the IT team must cope with tight deadlines, rapid change and a frantic pace. So when The Dallas Morning News decided to evaluate, select and implement enterprise systems management, the team knew they needed a solution that would be quick to implement, require little training and produce results quickly.

Bob (Robert) T. Mason (born April 22, 1961 in International Falls, Minnesota) is a retired American ice hockey goaltender.

A member of the 1984 U.S.
, IT director of operations, set about evaluating two major enterprise systems management products. Both provided comprehensive features, but each required significant time and expense to customize and implement. Lang and Mason also calculated they would need to dedicate ded·i·cate

With TriActive's Management Service Provider (MSP (1) (Management Service Provider or Managed Service Provider) An organization that manages a customer's computer systems and networks which are either located on the customer's premises or at a third-party datacenter. ) approach, Lang and Mason found the best of both worlds: an integrated full-range approach to systems management that would support rapid implementation, offer affordable monthly operational costs, and make the IT staff proficient pro·fi·cient

in a matter of a few hours.

Lang's and Mason's teams have set aggressive strategic goals that TriActive Systems Manager can help them achieve. "We want to increase first-call resolution rates at the Dallas Morning News help desk from 50% to 80%. With TriActive's remote tools, we expect to significantly reduce deskside support requirements and increase first-call resolution," Lang notes.

The Dallas Morning News is also pursuing efficiency initiatives. "We want to make consolidations to reduce our number of servers from the current level of about 100," he stated. "We should be able to sustain our environment effectively with fewer servers if we're smart in our planning and support." As soon as TriActive MicroAgents(TM) are deployed on The Dallas Morning News servers, they kick off inventory scans of the servers, allowing the staff immediate access to data on the server capacity and configuration, which can be analyzed an·a·lyze

Lang is also anticipating the support requirements of up to 11 local bureaus that will be set up in the greater Dallas metropolitan area. The Dallas Morning News will produce weekly local newspaper inserts specific to individual suburbs, each created by a local bureau of reporters, photographers and advertising salespeople sales·peo·ple

. "My team needs to give effective support to each new bureau while continuing to give high service levels to The Dallas Morning News building, corporate headquarters of our parent company Belo, and the north production plant," Lang notes. "TriActive's Web-based architecture is ideal for that sort of distributed environment."

"This solution delivers what we were beginning to think we couldn't find," says Mason. "With TriActive, we've got the benefit of enterprise systems management, fast deployment, almost no training, and a scalable architecture."
