Technological Advances to Push Aircraft Upgrade Markets, Says Frost & Sullivan.Business Editors SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2000 Governments have been forced to rethink their defense budgets following the Cold War. Militaries can no longer justify expensive, performance-driven weapons systems when no significant threat exists. However, technological advances are offering governments the opportunity to upgrade and modify their current military aircraft fleets without breaking the bank. New strategic market research from Frost & Sullivan (www.frost.com), "World Military Aircraft Upgrade and Modification Markets," reveals that this industry generated more than $6 billion in revenues in 1999. Frost & Sullivan projects that there will be sporadic growth over the next several years, creating $6.13 billion of revenue by 2006. New aircraft is still a top funding priority for many governments, but the surge in the upgrades market has been fueled by militaries outfitting their current fleets with the latest technological gear. This allows them to use older aircraft with new technology and more roles and capabilities, while they prepare for the deployment of the next generation of fighter, attack and transport aircraft. "Neglected fleets are finally receiving necessary upgrades," says Frost & Sullivan industry expert Brooks Lieske. "The delay of some new aircraft programs, regional tensions, technology advancements and the stabilization of downsizing efforts sparked the growth in this segment of the market." Manufacturers are rushing to fill the void by diversifying their product lines and bundling tailored solutions. For companies to become more competitive, they must partner with other participants to gain access to more markets. "Consolidation is a must to remain competitive in this era of smaller defense budgets," says Lieske. "Regional mergers make the world market more competitive. Large integrators are trying to get footholds in countries and regions where they limited exposure." "Maintaining a variety of product lines structured on a cost basis will help manufacturers successfully target militaries with small- and medium-sized aircraft upgrade budgets," says Lieske.
