symbol TCMN TCMN Twin Cities Music Network  today announced it will begin a four-month technology trial that will demonstrate the ease of download-ding music from a central music library to its new-age digital jukeboxes. Touchtunes Jukebox Inc., a TMC affiliate and software company based in Montreal, Canada, will coordinate the trial in collaboration with MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices. It provides commands and functions to open, play and close the device.

(2) (Microwave Communications Inc.
which will provide the telecommunications facilities. The technology trial will involve some 20 digital jukeboxes located in such major markets as Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
. The trial is scheduled to end in May.

Playing music without CDs or vinyl records, a digital jukebox operates like a computer with the music selections stored on and played from the system's hard drive. Updating and changing the system's music memory is accomplished via a built-in modem and data link to a centrally located music library. By interacting with a user-friendly touchscreen interface, an integral part of every unit, jukebox operators will be able to "order" any individual music title, including the newest releases, anytime 24 hours a day. The music will then be downloaded from the central music library residing in the network MCI Developer's Lab located in Richardson, Texas Richardson is a suburb in Dallas County and Collin County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 91,803, while according to a 2006 estimate, the population had grown to 99,200. . The speed and efficiency of digital music distribution enables new music to reach jukeboxes faster while also enabling the jukeboxes to effectively test market new songs.

TMC's digital jukeboxes capture critical information on musical tastes of jukebox users and, through telecommunications services, are able to feed back this information so it can be used to track and identify music preferences and trends. They can store in memory a minimum of 500 musical selections, with an almost unlimited capacity. Customers can browse the music database using the touchscreen and play any selection residing in the unit.

According the TMC, sound reproduction and its expedient delivery through downloading via telecommunications links is the future of commercial music. TMC intends to be first off the mark to have cleared the necessary licensing requirements in this $2 billion per year jukebox market.
