Tech-Assist Joins Intermec Premier Solutions Partner Program.

Intermec Technologies Corp. has named Tech-Assist Inc., of Frederick, Maryland, to its Premier Solutions Partner Program.

Tech-Assist develops and implements software used in continuous process industries and the military to aid operators and managers with the tasks of plant operations management.

Intermec and Tech-Assist will deploy Intermec's 700 Series handheld computers, based on the Microsoft Windows Powered Pocket PC operating system, to mobile workers in utility companies. The combination of Tech-Assist's Shift Operations Management System (eSOMS) software and Intermec 700 Series computers provides users the ability to collect and process data during routine maintenance and inspection rounds. eSOMS displays historical operating trends for a piece of equipment and guides technicians on their rounds to ensure that each item of equipment is inspected according to schedule.

Operators also can use the hardware/software combination to perform calculations in the field. For example, where a technician once took 40 to 50 readings on a gas turbine, wrote all the data down and returned to the office to calculate power generation, now data can be entered and calculations performed right at the site, providing immediate access to information and reducing the possibility of error.

"Field utility workers often encounter extreme temperatures -- they can be moving from a hot generator room straight into sub-zero temperatures outside. Tech-Assist decided early on that Pocket PC was the way to go. "Our customers told us they wanted a smaller form factor in their mobile data collection devices," Lechowicz said. "We looked at other operating systems, but went with Pocket PC based on several factors: more memory, more power, ease of use and ease of programming."
