Team DLX.IT WAS SOME TIME in early March when I received the call from Burnett regarding what's now known as the King of the Road contest. He gave me the basic plan for the race--no details yet, and all I could think of was the movie Cannonball Run with Burt Reynolds Burt Reynolds (born February 11, 1936) is an Oscar-nominated Emmy Award-winning American actor. Some of his memorable roles include Lewis Medlock in Deliverance, Paul Crewe in the original version of The Longest Yard, Bo 'Bandit' Darville in . I mean, this could be a seriously cool trip. Should I put an all-black Pontiac Firebird The Pontiac Firebird was a pony car built by the Pontiac division of General Motors between 1967 and 2002. The Firebird was introduced in the same year with its platform sharing cousin the Chevrolet Camaro. on the company card? It would have to be complete with T-Tops and the Firebird hood mural, of course. I would also have to grow a mustache, and have some tweaker-looking biker bik·er n. 1. One who rides a bicycle or a motorbike. 2. A motorcyclist, especially a member of a motorcycle gang. biker Noun a person who rides a motorcycle chick with me at all times. We could be in front of the tour van, finding spots for the guys ahead of time, creating diversions to keep the fuzz out of our way. This could be the best trip ever. When I presented my idea to the bosses at Deluxe--needless to say--it didn't go over so well. So I had to take a different approach to the race; I was going to have to work with the resources I had. We own a tour van that is equipped with every tool you could ever need. I was able to modify the engine and suspension of this tour van with our mechanic, and after several late nights at the shop, it now runs on high-octane jet fuel. Very fast. That was a good start. Not knowing any details about the race (except where and when it would start and finish) made things difficult. I wasn't able to plan anything out. I had no idea what we were going to skate or which path we were going to take across America. This meant I had to be ready for anything. I assembled our team by the only guidelines I was given--each team gets five riders and one alternate back home, just in case someone gets broke off. I needed a team to be the all around crushing crew. After days of going through the list and juggling people's schedules, I was able to narrow it down to five riders. They were JT Aultz, Dan Drehohl, Darrell Stanton, Tony Trujillo Tony Trujillo (born August 23, 1982 in Santa Rosa, California) is an American skateboarder. He is noted for his anti-corporate attitude and love for rock and roll, as well as his aggressive skating style. , and the new guy, Ernie Torres. With this gang of rippers, along with Gabe Morford our photographer and Dan Vellucci our filmer, we were an army--a tight unit of Special Forces ready for anything. We don't need showers or beds. We don't need clean clothes or new laces in our shoes. We barely need food. And the food I do give the riders is always laced with gunpowder to keep them mean. I've been to hell and back with these guys over the years--I trust them all with my life. WE WERE ALL RUNNING on little-to-no sleep after driving straight across America, and we pulled into Manhattan straight during a blackout. What a sight--New York City with no lights. At all. You couldn't even see your own hand in front of your face in some places. Public transportation was shut down and the city was completely filled, yet frozen. This meant no hotel. Finally! I've always wanted to camp on the streets of NYC NYC abbr. New York City NYC New York City . The package with our guidelines for the race never made it, due to the blackout. So we had to have it faxed in at our starting point Noun 1. starting point - earliest limiting point terminus a quo commencement, get-go, offset, outset, showtime, starting time, beginning, start, kickoff, first - the time at which something is supposed to begin; "they got an early start"; "she knew from the , KCDC KCDC Keewatin Career Development Corporation KCDC Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company KCDC Knoxville's Community Development Corporation KCDC Knox County Development Corporation KCDC Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Brooklyn. The challenges seemed easy enough. As it went, just hitting up Max Fish for a quick drink with Dan and Tony set us back some ... Two days later we were able to finish our New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of challenges. The race was on. ON THE WAY TO OUR NEXT CITY we made a few pit stops. We had to hit up Philly and Pittsburgh on our way to Louisville, which wasn't on our list, but too hard to pass up. I started a calendar for the remainder of the race. trying to figure how long we could spend in each city. This is when 1 realized we shouldn't have made those pit stops, Now we were truly racing. CHICAGO THE CHICAGO CHALLENGES WERE COOL, except for the benihana challenge. That was completely embarrassing. I mean, imagine filming a benihana at a skatepark--in front of people--and bailing it. Terrible is what that was. Good thing we had Uriah, a close ally, to help us find the spots we needed in Chicago. This made things go as smooth as they could go in the humid Mid-West heat. We drove nonstop to Minneapolis, our next city on the list, where (finally) the King of the Road package caught up with us. We now had the official rule book and each city's special challenges. The challenges were all in official Thrasher thrasher: see mimic thrush. thrasher Any of 17 species (family Mimidae) of New World songbirds that have a downcurved bill and are noted for noisily foraging on the ground in dense thickets and for loud, varied songs. envelopes and sealed with what looked to be goat's blood and wax, then stamped with an official Thrasher stamp. Cool. MINNEAPOLIS THE CHALLENGES we were presented with in Minneapolis would take some craftsmanship, We (Dan Drehobl and I) had to make a wacky skateboard out of something not meant to be ridden. I racked my road-weary brain all morning trying to figure out what would be rad. Thanks to Seth, our long time friend, we were able to find an army surplus store down the street from the hole]. I, of course, had to go in and find some weird weapon to be converted ... like I do at every surplus store I see. Inside I was amazed to see the collection of bomb casings. This could be what I was looking for Looking for In the context of general equities, this describing a buy interest in which a dealer is asked to offer stock, often involving a capital commitment. Antithesis of in touch with. . Maybe a weird bomb board? I asked the guy about the only casing that seemed like a board could be constructed from. He informed me the bomb cost $4,000 Back to the drawing board, I thought, until I saw a dummy soldier on soldier on Verb to continue one's efforts despite difficulties or pressure my way out holding a 100-percent-to-scale M16 rifle M16 rifle or AR-15 Assault rifle adopted as a standard weapon by the U.S. Army in 1967. I asked the guy what it was made of; it was well-constructed, using rebar re·bar n. 1. A rod or bar used for reinforcement in concrete or asphalt pourings. 2. A group of such rods forming a grid. [re(inforcing) bar.] and everything, After having the cops stop us at gunpoint outside the hardware store, we were on our way to many hours of grinding and drilling, trying to make this model gun actually roll. Eventually the gun was complete, once Drehobl and his Nam Vet look started flying around. DENVER NEXT WE HAD TO GET TO DENVER, the meeting point for all the teams involved. The way our schedule was working the drive to Denver (1,000 miles) would have to be nonstop. Again. This was beginning to be the way we did things. Once we rolled into Denver we had to pick up our mystery guest. This could quite possibly be the worst thing to happen to our van--if we get some kook it would slow us down for sure. Not knowing whom we were waiting on at the Denver Airport was rough. I mean, what if the worst barney came from around the corner with a sign reading "Team Deluxe?" We'd have to use the brass knuckles on a daily basis for sure. To my surprise the mystery guest was none other than Randy Colvin, an early pro for World Industries and longtime partner to our family. He's known for exhibiting a rad style and having good times. Perfect, he'll fit right in. The rest of the challenges seemed to be cool--skate a bowl and a ledge, then meet at the Denver skatepark A skatepark is a purpose-built recreational environment for skateboarders, bmxers and aggressive skaters to ride and develop their sport and technique. A skatepark may contain half-pipes, quarter pipes, handrails, trick boxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, full pipes, stairs, . Tracking down the owners of the bowl took a few days. The bowl was called The Humbler. I knew by the name it was going to be good times. When we showed up I was amazed to see one of the tightest wooden bowls ever. The Humbler was the perfect name for this wooden masterpiece. We skated for a good half an hour, but I think the only cool trick done was the wasp sting wasp sting A sting from wasps, bees, hornets and yellow jackets, which may trigger allergic reactions varying greatly in severity; avoidance and prompt treatment are essential Management Allergen injection therapy to the face that I pulled. SALT LAKE CITY AFTER A GOOD BACKYARD RAMP JAM and bar-b-que, we hit the road towards our final city, SLC (Subscriber Loop Carrier) Lucent's designation for its digital loop carrier (DLC) products. See digital loop carrier. See also 386SLC. , Utah. The challenges all seemed to be easy enough, except for the Mormon's undergarment thing. What the hell is a Mormon's undergarment anyway? This challenge was going to be the most difficult yet, It turns out anyone with such undergarments isn't about to show them to just some random tattooed weirdo. Hence the term "sacred." It was at the last moment on our way out of town that we got a call from one of the locals whose ramp we had skated the night before. He had some guy he worked with willing to show us the garments. We had to meet him at some Jack In The Box off the freeway. We had no idea who this guy was, so we ended up wandering around in the parking lot waiting for someone to come up to us showing their weird undergarments. The guy turned out to be the most average construction worker you could imagine, and he was really cool about showing us the garments. Then I said "God damnit," and his face changed immediately, We already had the photo to prove we met the challenge, so who cares. I later found out he called Thrasher in a worried fit, begging the mag not to run the photos. He thought making a mockery of the strange undergarment might cancel out Verb 1. cancel out - wipe out the effect of something; "The new tax effectively cancels out my raise"; "The `A' will cancel out the `C' on your record" wipe out its protective shield for his soul. Totally out of their minds, those Mormons. FINISH LINE AFTER SALT LAKE CITY we headed for the finish line back in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden . We still had points to obtain so we stopped at all the spots on our path, and a few off our path. This trip was one crazy ride. We skated some really fun spots and had to do wacky things all across America. Kind of like we always do, only this time we had a reason to get fully weird--we had to win this race. To truly understand why we won you have to look deeper than the points sheet. You have to look at the fire in the team's eyes. We were truly driven.
