About 27 teachers from 17 public and private schools in Sidon and its neighboring neigh·bor

The workshop was part of the UNESCO program "World Heritage in Young Hands," which encourages young people to become involved in heritage conservation. It tackled five main subjects: the World Heritage Convention signed in 1972, world heritage and identity, world heritage and tourism, world heritage and the environment and world heritage and the culture of peace. The activities also included a visit to Sidon's coastal fort and forming a follow up committee.Aa

Hariri said during the gathering that teaching about historic sites reinforced patriotism, but she stressed that a teacher should not be a simple provider of information but they should rather be responsible of transforming "rigid information into lively facts students wouldn't forget."Aa

"Through this workshop we are following the path of modernization modernization

Transformation of a society from a rural and agrarian condition to a secular, urban, and industrial one. It is closely linked with industrialization. As societies modernize, the individual becomes increasingly important, gradually replacing the family,
 and we are discovering how to learn from history and to add to it," she said. Hariri also referred to world-heritage agreements and called on preserving historic sites through education.Aa

Representative of the UNESCO regional office Joseph Kraydi reiterated the importance of including world heritage education in school curriculums. He said that teachers played a decisive role in raising awareness about the subject and helping UNESCO voice its message to the world.Aa

Representative of the UNESCO national committee Salwa Baasiri Siniora, said that the workshop was especially important because it reflected a strong collaboration Strong collaboration (also known as radical collaboration) is a term coined by Larry Sanger to refer to a new type of collaboration made possible by computers and the Internet and used on sites like Wikipedia.  and coordination between the various schools of Sidon and its neighboring towns.Aa
