Teacher tech help: googling made easy.

Q I typed "Civil War" into Google (Google, Mountain View, CA, www.google.com) The largest search engine on the Web, founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two Stanford University students. In 1996, they developed their "BackRub" search engine, named after its unique page ranking method (explained below). , and got 121,000,000 results! Help! How can I find the best resources?

A To narrow the pool, first try being more specific, e.g. "Civil War battlegrounds The name Battlegrounds may refer to:
  • Battlegrounds (World of Warcraft)
  • , a card game
  • The BattleGrounds, a total conversion for Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

  • Battleground
." Keep in mind that the most important search terms should always go first, so go with "Civil War lesson plans elementary" instead of the other way around. Whenever possible, use quotation marks quotation marks

to search for a specific phrase, perhaps combining it with other keywords: "The Battle of Antietam' official records." A nifty trick to eliminate unwanted results is to use negative terms. Typing in "Abraham Lincoln -Civil War," for example, will only turn up info on the prez not related to the war. Keep going, and you may uncover a "googlewhack": any search term that only produces a single result!
