Tax showdown in Florida State legislature. (Headlines).


Earlier this year, the Florida Florida, state, United States

 State Senate passed an extensive tax bill that would impose a 4.5 percent tax on meeting registration fees, regardless of whether the host organization is in state or out of state. The bill, which would amend the state's constitution, would lower the state sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  from 6 percent to 4.5 percent on most services, while repealing other tax exemptions tax exemption, immunity from the requirement of paying taxes. Federal, state, and usually local law provide exemption from taxation for a wide variety of organizations, usually not-for-profit, such as churches, colleges, universities, health care providers, various  to expand the sales tax base. Hotels, car rentals, and admissions to state theme parks would remain at 6 percent. In response to this bill, the Florida House drafted legislation mirroring the Senate initiative and unanimously voted against it. At this time, the Senate continues to hold its original bill as it attempts to garner support in the House. Should the Senate and House agree to the Senate bill, it would go to the voters on the November November: see month.  ballot ballot, means of voting for candidates for office. The choice may be indicated on or by the ballot forms themselves—e.g., colored balls (hence the term ballot, which is derived from the Italian ballotta,  as a proposed state constitutional amendment.

The bill would also tax membership dues, the scope of which remains ill defined.
