Tax pumps up gas prices.


Federal and state taxes account for 22.5% of what Americans pay for gasoline gasoline or petrol, light, volatile mixture of hydrocarbons for use in the internal-combustion engine and as an organic solvent, obtained primarily by fractional distillation and "cracking" of petroleum, but also obtained from natural gas, by  at the pump. In July 2004 the average tax was 43.7 cents a gallon gallon: see English units of measurement. .
