Tax collection improves.


QUITO -- The Internal Revenue Service announced this week that collection of the value added tax (VAT) increased 78.7% in the first three months of 2001 compared to the same period last year, and overall tax collection was up 570/0 for the same time. The total value of the VAT collected reached $300 million. Tax evasion still stands at about 30%.
