Tatung Speeds Up the Pace On Entry-Level Workstation & Server Line With New 440 MHz Systems; Both Tower and Rack-Mount Models Available.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--

Tatung Science & Technology Inc. (TSTI TSTI Total Safety Task Instruction

), celebrating more than 10 years of commitment to the SPARC (Scalable Performance ARChitecture) A family of RISC CPUs from Sun that runs mostly under Sun's Solaris, but also under Linux and BSD operating systems. After development began in the mid-1980s by David Patterson of the University of California at Berkeley and Bill (R) systems market, is previewing its fastest entry-level SPARC system to date, the COMPstation(R) U10-440, at the JavaOne Conference Booth No. 1434, June 14-16, in San Francisco's Moscone Center The Moscone Center is San Francisco, California's largest convention and exhibition complex. The complex consists of two main underground halls underneath Yerba Buena Gardens, Moscone North and Moscone South, as well the three-level Moscone West exhibition hall across 4th Street. .

Scheduled for release in July, this new line of single-processing workstations and servers takes advantage of the recently released 440 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  UltraSPARC-IIi processor from Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. Tatung offers the COMPstation U10-440 in both tower and rack-mount configurations. The rack-mount models feature a compact, 19-inch rack-mountable chassis design that suits the needs of Internet Service Providers Internet service provider (ISP)

New Chip Represents Continued Commitment to High Performance

Equipped with 2MB of external cache A cache that is not built into the CPU chip. It resides on the motherboard. See cache. , the 64-bit, 440 MHz UltraSPARC-IIi processor supports four 32-bit PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

An additional 64-bit UPA (Ultra Port Architecture) A high-speed interconnect between the CPU and memory from Sun. It uses a packet-switched crossbar architecture that can transfer more than 100 MBytes/sec.  slot on the U10-440 is designed for vertical add-ons such as Creator and Elite 3D graphics cards.

"The COMPstation U10-440 is proof of Tatung's commitment to continually enable our entry-level users to reach new limits with their desktops," said Kam Chan, president of TSTI. "The keystone to our success in this market has been the ability to provide our customers with the latest advances in SPARC chip technology, while maintaining a cost-effective solution."

With industry standard components, the COMPstation U10-440 is designed so that memory and peripherals expansion is both easy and cost-effective. This suits the changing needs of users as well as OEMs.

While incorporating the PCI I/O bus to offer users access to a host of peripherals, the COMPstation U10-440 also maintains full binary compatibility with the application software customers now use with their existing, SBus-based SPARC systems. No application changes are required in order for customers to continue to use the thousands of software programs available for the SPARC platform.

Supports Creator3D and Elite3D Graphics

The COMPstation U10-440 is affordably priced yet also meets the complex graphics requirements of today's MCAD MCAD Microsoft Certified Application Developer
MCAD Mechanical Computer Aided Design
MCAD Medium-Chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase (inherited metabolic disease)

, EDA (1) (Electronic Design Automation) Using the computer to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board. , animation, oil exploration, software development, and high-end financial services markets. Tatung provides a wide range of graphics solutions for cost-conscious users of these sophisticated 3D applications by supporting Creator3D graphics as well as both Elite3D m3 and Elite3D m6 graphics.

In addition to a PCI graphics card that comes standard with the system, all three of these cards (Creator3D, Elite3D m3 and Elite3D m6) are available as options on the U10-440. As the highest performance 3D graphics option, Elite 3D m6 delivers superior overall performance. It accelerates the rendering of 3-D triangles to a rate of 5.9 M(a) per second, making it an ideal choice for high-end 3-D users.

The U10-440 system comes pre-installed with the 64-bit Solaris 7 operating system from Sun, which gives users easy access to high functionality graphics and imaging APIs including Sun's XIL XIL X-Ray Interference Lithography
XIL eXtensible Indexing Language
XIL Xml Import Language
XIL X11 Imaging Language
XIL Xml Intermediate Language
XIL Xml Interface Language
XIL Xml Integrator Language
XIL Xilinx
. XIL is an imaging API that delivers powerful VIS (Visual Instruction Set) accelerated imaging and video functionality to applications and application developers. Through Solaris 7, U10-440 users can also take advantage of OpenGL, the popular 3D graphics API for advanced graphics visualization applications.

Five Drive Bays Support Diverse Peripheral Requirements

The COMPstation U10-440 is equipped with five drive bays that can be fitted with two, 3-1/2" hard drives; a 5-1/4" CD-ROM drive; a 4- or 8mm tape drive; and an additional 5-1/4" slot for another peripheral or a 3-1/2" floppy drive. Standard features consist of 128 MB of RAM; 9 GB hard drive; a PCI graphics card; a 64-bit slot for Creator and Elite 3D graphics cards; dual-channel Ultra-Wide SCSI SCSI
