), celebrating more than 10 years of commitment to the SPARC (Scalable Performance ARChitecture) A family of RISC CPUs from Sun that runs mostly under Sun's Solaris, but also under Linux and BSD operating systems. After development began in the mid-1980s by David Patterson of the University of California at Berkeley and Bill (R) systems market, today introduced the COMPstation(R) U60-2360, a new Sun Ultra 60-compatible workstation powered by dual 360 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  UltraSPARC-II microprocessors. Tatung Leverages Sun's Highest Performing UltraSPARC-II Processors

As Tatung's most powerful workstation, the COMPstation U60-2360 leverages the dual 64-bit UltraSPARC-II processors to deliver performance of 15.4 SPECint_95 and 27.8 SPECfp_95 (see Note A).

"The new COMPstation U60-2360 demonstrates Tatung's ability to quickly leverage the most advanced Sun UltraSPARC-II microprocessor technology available," said Jeff O'Neal, Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA[3]) is an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information-technology services, founded on 24 February 1982.  Group Marketing Manager for SPARC products. "By combining our superior processing technology with Tatung's own motherboard design and the industry standard PCI bus PCI bus - Peripheral Component Interconnect , Tatung has produced a powerful, next-generation system."

The tower configuration delivers the sophisticated functionality and complex graphics required by geophysicists, CAD designers, animators and other high-end graphics users, and is particularly suited to 3-D modeling and full digital prototyping Digital Prototyping is a word that has been used in the MCAD space for more than a decade. It reimerged around 2007 and has became a discussion topic with trade media and industry analysts.

The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and , communications, commercial and industrial configurations. With a footprint that is 7 inches high, 17.25 inches wide, and 18-inches deep, the rack-mount system's space-saving design allows for easy vertical stacking.

"The COMPstation U60-2360 can dramatically impact commercial, industrial and technical computing by speeding tasks and enhancing time-to-market," said Kam Chan, president of TSTI. "And, the PCI I/O bus allows users to leverage the wide range of PCI devices available, while enabling further performance and price advantages."

Supports Creator Graphics For Complex, Interactive 3D Graphics

The COMPstation U60-2360 supports Creator Graphics 3D technology to allow for the completion of complex, interactive 3D graphics visualization and digital editing tasks. With support for the Solaris operating environment, the system also offers users easy access to high-performance and high functionality graphics and imaging APIs including Sun's XIL XIL X-Ray Interference Lithography
XIL eXtensible Indexing Language

, an imaging API for delivering powerful VIS (Visual Instruction Set) accelerated imaging and video functionality to applications and application developers. Users can also take advantage of OpenGL, the popular 3D graphics API for advanced graphics visualization applications. OpenGL 1.1, standard on Solaris version 2.6, provides full OpenGL compliance to the latest 1.1 specification.

The system comes pre-installed with Solaris 2.6, which includes an enhanced Common Desktop Environment for ease-of-use and intuitive operation. In addition, customers can maintain full binary compatibility with the application software they now use with their existing SPARC systems. No application changes are required in order for customers to continue to use the thousands of software programs available for the SPARC platform.

Intranet Extension Software Delivers Advanced Functionality

Beyond the Solaris 2.6 operating system and related software that comes standard with the new COMPstation U60-2360, Tatung also offers the Solaris Server Intranet Extension package as an option. Intranet Extension is a software suite that equips corporate users with tools for improved system performance; remote connectivity and security; and network services and systems management.

The Intranet Extension suite includes multiple network service software products including Sun WebServer 1.0, TotalNET Advanced Server, Solstice solstice (sŏl`stĭs) [Lat.,=sun stands still], in astronomy, either of the two points on the ecliptic that lie midway between the equinoxes (separated from them by an angular distance of 90°).  Internet Mail Server, Java IDL (1) (Interface Definition Language) A language used to describe the interface to a routine or function. Tower and Rack-Mount Systems Offer Plenty of Options

The COMPstation U60-2360 supports one 33 MHz, 32-bit PCI device; two 33 MHz, 64-bit PCI devices; and one 66 MHz, 64-bit PCI device. A 64-bit horizontal UPA (Ultra Port Architecture) A high-speed interconnect between the CPU and memory from Sun. It uses a packet-switched crossbar architecture that can transfer more than 100 MBytes/sec.  slot is available for add-ons such as Creator graphics cards. Standard configurations include two, 360 MHz UltraSPARC-II processors; 128 MB RAM; and 4 GB of hard disk storage. Other standard features consist of Ultra Wide SCSI; two serial ports; one parallel port; and a 100-BaseT Ethernet interface.

The tower configuration is equipped with a PCI graphics card, and it offers up to five drive bays for incorporating two, standard 3-1/2-inch hard drives; a 5-1/4-inch CD-ROM drive; a 4- or 8mm tape drive; and another peripheral, such as a 3-1/2-inch floppy drive or other device that will fit into a 5-1/4-inch slot. The rack-mount configuration, designed to utilize network storage, features slots for two, one-inch, 3-1/2-inch drives. An add-on disk array storage subsystem available from Tatung as an option enables users to add peripherals as needed as needed prn. See prn order. . With hard disk capacity of 72 GB or more, the disk array makes the COMPstation U60-2360 robust enough to support departmental or small enterprise Internet or Intranet applications. Other options include up to 2 GB of RAM; up to 18 GB or more of hard disk storage; additional PCI graphics cards; Creator 3D Graphics; ATM connectivity; Ultra Wide SCSI; and a wide range of monitors. In addition, TSTI is offering monitors in 17", 19", 21" and 24" models. Suggested list pricing for the COMPstation U60-2360 starts at $15,990 for a standard tower configuration. The rack-mount system is offered at a suggested list price of $16,270.
