Last week, CAIL issued a purchase order indicating its intention to acquire 750 C-PHONE systems. The first part of the order has already shipped.

For the past five months, CAIL has been evaluating C-PHONE and the desktop video conferencing marketplace by exhibiting C-PHONE at various trade shows and demonstrating the technology to end-users and resellers throughout Canada.

Full-featured Phone Systems for Video Conferencing

C-PHONE is a video PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN).  phone system that turns networked desktop PCs into videophones featuring real-time, full-motion color video at 30 frames per second with synchronized audio. The system enables users to make live videophone (1) (VideoPhone) A line of videophones (definition #1 below) from AT&T that were introduced in the early 1990s and later pulled off the market due to poor sales. The first models came with a price tag above $1,000, and a pair were needed. See Picturephone.  calls from their own desktop PCs to other people on the network. A video conferencing system as well, C-PHONE allows users to make calls over high-speed digital phone lines to remote sites. A hardware and software video solution, C-PHONE has a suggested list price of $1,995 per PC.

Further enhancing user functionality is the C-PHONE Multipoint Controller Unit (MCU (1) (MicroController Unit) A computer on a single chip. See microcontroller.
