Companies To Jointly Develop Fault-Tolerant Version Of CA-Unicenter

Tandem To Standardize On CA-Unicenter For All Platforms

Tandem Computers Incorporated and Computer Associates International, Inc. have joined forces to deliver fault-tolerant software, solving one of the most critical challenges in high- volume, enterprise computing.

Under the terms of a joint development and cross-licensing agreement, the two companies will deliver enterprise management solutions which provide a highly available and fault-tolerant infrastructure for distributed multiplatform computing.

The companies will also jointly deliver a cluster-aware version of CA-Unicenter for the management of Tandem and other clustered environments, including Windows NT, UNIX and Tandem Himalaya servers. Tandem will standardize on CA-Unicenter for all its server platforms.

Highlights of the agreement include the following:

-- Tandem will standardize on CA-Unicenter for all Tandem and Tandem-enabled cluster systems, including the Microsoft Windows NT Server platform and parallel processing Himalaya systems. Tandem implementations will be fault tolerant, integrating key Tandem NonStopTM system management functionality into CA-Unicenter. Tandem also will provide full sales and support capabilities for the CA-Unicenter offering to its customer base.

-- Tandem and CA will jointly develop an option to CA-Unicenter that, for the first time, will bring high availability and fault tolerance to multiplatform environments. This product offering will combine the proven enterprise management capabilities of CA-Unicenter with Tandem's high availability and clustering technology. The new product will target Windows NT and UNIX server environments.

-- Computer Associates will provide new operational management capabilities for the increasing number of platforms enabled by Tandem's breakthrough ServerNet(TM) cluster interconnect technology. Such systems currently include Compaq as well as Windows NT servers.

-- Also under discussion is an agreement to incorporate Tandem's database management technology -- part of Tandem's line of proven, reliable middleware products code-named "NonStop ServerWare Solutions" -- in CA's database solutions for the clustered environments.

By leveraging Tandem's and CA's respective areas of expertise, the new agreement will provide important benefits for customers of both companies. Tandem clients will have access to a fully integrated, multiplatform systems and network management tool that will enable them to seamlessly manage Tandem cluster systems as part of their heterogeneous global networks. CA clients will benefit from the unmatched levels of system reliability and scalability provided by Tandem's NonStop software technology -- to be embodied in a high- availability version of CA-Unicenter.
