Tandem Supporting Piccolo Middleware For Universal, Bidirectional Connectivity.

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 1996--Tandem Computers Incorporated today announced it is supporting Cornerstone Software, Inc.'s new Piccolo piccolo, small transverse flute pitched an octave higher than the standard flute. Its tone is bright and shrill, and it can produce the highest notes in the orchestral range. The piccolo is used in orchestras and especially in military bands. Now customers writing applications to the Piccolo API will be able to take full advantage of Tandem's Himalaya parallel processing servers -- with their inherent high performance, scalability and reliability -- in a heterogeneous environment.

Piccolo, which is protocol and platform independent, allows the building of peer-to-peer and client/server applications on an extensive range of PC and workstation client platforms connecting to numerous types of servers. This open connectivity is supported across multiple protocols, including TCP/IP TCP/IP

In addition, Piccolo supports Tandem's Remote Server Call (RSC RSC Royal Society of Chemistry (UK)

The resultant RSC for Piccolo product, now marketed by Tandem, supports a variety of workstation platforms linked bidirectionally to Himalaya servers over a wide range of protocols.

According to Jeff Tonkel, vice president of Product Management and Product Marketing at Tandem, "Piccolo provides Himalaya customers with a flexible middleware foundation for their open client/server applications and allows Himalaya's well-known reliability and performance to be introduced into heterogeneous peer-to-peer environments. In conjunction with Tandem's RSC, this same peer-to-peer capability adds significant functionality to client/server transaction processing applications."

The powerful flexibility of the combination of Himalaya and Piccolo, and its contribution toward fulfilling the promise of client/server computing, is further illustrated by Tandem also offering Piccolo as part of its online transaction processing product, Remote Server Call."

The Piccolo API will also be supported on Tandem's Integrity UNIX UNIX
