Tandem Resources Ltd. Announces Additional 1680 Rubies Identified.TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 1997--Tandem Resources Ltd. ("Tandem") reports that a new report by Lakefield Research has substantially enlarged the ruby count at its Guibord Township property east of Matheson, Northern Ontario Northern Ontario is the part of the province of Ontario which lies north of Lake Huron (including Georgian Bay), the French River and Lake Nipissing. Northern Ontario has a land area of 802,000 km² (310,000 mi²) and constitutes 87% of the land area of Ontario, although it . A further examination of the fusion residue, requested by Tandem, has revealed the presence of 1680 rubiesin the two samples from previously submitted whole drill core. Of the 1680 new rubies found, 40 are designated as being macros varying in size between 0.8 millimetres and 2 millimetres. The new count is in addition to the 110 micro rubies previously reported. The size of the samples was 34.7 kilograms and 53.2 kilograms obtained from the only two drill holes put down on the kimberlite kimberlite: see diamond. kimberlite or blue ground Dark, heavy, often fragmented igneous rock that may contain diamonds in the rock matrix. pipe. Tandem believes that the presence of so many rubies in such small samples in a kimberlite pipe is without precedent. A report by Warren Boyd, a noted gemmologist, on the initial ruby samples stated that: "The rubies were of very good colour saturation saturation, of an organic compound saturation, of an organic compound, condition occurring when its molecules contain no double or triple bonds and thus cannot undergo addition reactions. and could be described as an intense purplish red Noun 1. purplish red - a red with a tinge of purple purplish-red red, redness - red color or pigment; the chromatic color resembling the hue of blood colour. The colour would be similar to rubies obtained from Thailand and East Africa". Ruby is a variety of the mineral corundum corundum (kərŭn`dəm), mineral, aluminum oxide, Al2O3. Its colour can vary from delicate pink to a deep carmine red (Chem.) a coloring matter obtained from carmine as a purple-red substance, and probably allied to the phthaleïns. See also: Carmine . The deep carmine red ruby is rare and the value exceeds that of a comparable diamond. Tandem will call on various experts to evaluate the worth of the 40 macros found. Tandem is planning a further drilling program this winter which will include sampling the kimberlite pipe with much larger core. The original samples were obtained from "B" core which measures approximately 1+ inches in diameter. The new drilling program will employ "H" core which is about double the size of "B" core. During the summer Tandem carried out a detailed geophysical survey Geophysical survey refers to the systematic collection of geophysical data for spatial studies. Geophysical surveys may use a great variety of sensing instruments, and data may be collected from above or below the Earth's surface or from aerial or marine platforms. in the immediate vicinity of the discovery pipe . Based on the results of that survey, Tandem believes that there are other pipes in the immediate vicinity of the discovery pipe. Kimberlite pipes generally occur in clusters. Under an agreement with Homestake Mining, Tandem has the right to earn an 80% interest in the Guibord property by spending $2.0 million by the year 2000. Tandem has already spent an excess of $500,000.
