His father died when Pieper was 20, and on his 18th birthday he was subject to a motoring accident which destroyed his sporting career as a player , Tandem's president and chief executive officer.

"Tandem has made significant investments in partnering, people, and products to become a major competitor in this fast-developing market," said Pieper. "We are now doing business with more than 60 DSS customers around the world. Even more significantly, these customers are experiencing rapid results in turning information into actionable- knowledge in support of their strategic business initiatives. The Information Delivery program will leverage investments to an even wider range of customers."

According to Aaron Zornes, Executive Vice President and Director, Application Development Strategies, Meta Group Inc., "In addition to bringing rich technology to the decision support environment, Tandem is building the right infrastructure to provide an end-to-end solutions methodology. This has positioned it well to become a major force in this explosive market." ^The major components of Tandem's Information Delivery program include end-to-end consulting services, alliances with leading software providers, complete software and hardware solutions, and an array of new decision support product packages and enhancements.

Information Delivery Services

Tandem's Information Delivery program is grounded on a unique end- to-end Directional Consulting Process that encompasses business exploration, project definition, project validation, implementation, and production services.

"Information delivery projects are iterative in nature," said Chuck Buffum, Director of Tandem's decision support programs. "Databases constantly grow in size, and end-user information requirements The information needed to support a business or other activity. Systems analysts turn information requirements (the what and when) into functional specifications (the how) of an information system.  become more complex over time. To be successful, solutions providers must be positioned to offer business and technical services that add continuous value while minimizing a customer's risk. That is precisely what Tandem is delivering."

Whether for a new or an existing DSS initiative, Tandem's information delivery cycle starts with helping users map information to specific business goals. In the project validation stage, companies have access to Tandem's innovative Solution Factory -- a facility that provides an environment to pilot applications in a large-scale context.

On the technical end, Tandem's suite of implementation and production services ensure that the process comes together effectively, aid in the transfer of knowledge to the customer, and capitalize on Cap´i`tal`ize on`

Information Delivery Partnerships

Recent additions to the Tandem suite of DSS solutions include: Andyne Computing's GQL (Graphical Query Language) The former name of a family of query and reporting tools used to access databases on client/server systems from Hummingbird Ltd., Toronto, Ontario (www.hummingbird.com).  and PaBLO, integrated query and analysis tools for relational and multidimensional data sources; KnowledgeSEEKER, a leading data mining, data analysis and prediction tool from ANGOSS Software International; and the SAS System (1) Originally called the "Statistical Analysis System," it is an integrated set of data management and decision support tools from SAS that runs on platforms from PCs to mainframes. , an integrated suite of enterprise-wide information delivery products from SAS Institute.

Tandem's Information Delivery Partnership program provides customers with maximum flexibility and the widest range of choice from a single source, anywhere in the world. With over 40 DSS partners, all decision support software categories are covered, including industry leading tools for extract and load, applications development, data management, open connectivity, information delivery, and implementation partners.

Information delivery tools include best-of-breed solutions for ad-hoc and managed queries, data mining, database marketing, on-line analytical processing (database) On-Line Analytical Processing - (OLAP) A category of database software which provides an interface such that users can transform or limit raw data according to user-defined or pre-defined functions, and quickly and interactively examine the results in various dimensions , and visualization.

Software solutions are available for both of Tandem's, scalable server platforms: the Integrity platform based on the UNIX UNIX

Information Delivery Solution Packages: Special Pricing

As part of its Information Delivery program, Tandem is also introducing a range of competitively priced, hardware/software packages optimized for decision support. The series of five solution packages are aimed at providing the best price/performance and scalability for any given-size decision support system/data warehouse -- from 50 gigabytes up to one terabyte.

The five solution packages are based on Tandem Integrity NR servers (the industry's most scalable servers running on the UNIX operating system Noun 1. UNIX operating system - trademark for a powerful operating system

The solutions packages are available today, with prices ranging from US$284,000 for the 50-gigabyte package to US$5.3 million for the one-terabyte package.

Product Enhancements

A series of DSS product enhancements is also being announced, which will be available beginning in April. Oracle Parallel Server A version of the Oracle database system designed for massively parallel processors (MPPs). It allows multiple CPUs to access a single database.

Integrity NR servers also support the Illustra Object/Relational database management system, which combines the benefits of relational and object databases.

In addition, an Escon Channel Connect and parallel load feature for Himalaya servers greatly increase the efficiency of loading data from legacy systems into a data warehouse.

The newest version of Tandem's highly scalable NonStop SQL/MP parallel database management system will soon be available for Himalaya servers. NonStop SQL/MP Release 3.0 incorporates several unique features that provide even faster response to complex queries and improves the manageability of large-scale data warehousing applications. NonStop ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  Server 2.0 supports Microsoft Windows 95 and other clients with extended query management facilities.
