Tandberg Data Brings New Technology for Low-Cost Professional Removable Storage to Market; Tandberg RDX Offers Removable Hard Disk Drive-Based Data Storage for Data Backup, Recovery and Archiving within the Entry-Level Backup Segment.

OSLO, Norway -- Tandberg Data ASA Asa (ā`sə), in the Bible, king of Judah, son and successor of Abijah. He was a good king, zealous in his extirpation of idols. When Baasha of Israel took Ramah (a few miles N of Jerusalem), Asa bought the help of Benhadad of Damascus and  (OSE OSE - Open Systems Environment :TAD), the only European data storage company that designs and manufactures tape drives, tape automation and disk subsystems, today announced a strategic agreement with ProStor Systems, based in Boulder, Colo., providing Tandberg Data a worldwide sales and manufacturing license agreement for the Tandberg RDX RDX Cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (CAS Number 121-82-4)

(TM).

Whereas LTO (Linear Tape Open) A family of open magnetic tape standards developed by HP, IBM and Quantum (formerly the Certance subsidiary of Seagate) that are licensed to third-party vendors. LTO cartridges contain a memory that stores historical usage data. (TM) technology has become the de facto standard Hardware or software that is widely used, but not endorsed by a standards organization. Contrast with de jure standard.

de facto standard - A widespread consensus on a particular product or protocol which has not been ratified by any official standards body, such as ISO,
for midrange tape technology where high capacity and high performance is required, no standard has yet been defined in the low-end segment of removable data storage. Tandberg Data believes that the Tandberg RDX will become the default standard for low-end entry-level backup and archiving.

The Tandberg RDX is a removable disk-based cartridge technology that combines the portability and long-term archivability of tape with the high reliability, superior performance and instant access of hard disks at a price lower than competitive tape solutions.

The Tandberg RDX consists of either a 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch internal drive bay connected to the host either via SATA (Serial ATA) A serial version of the ATA (IDE) interface, which has been the de facto standard hard disk interface for desktop PCs for more than two decades. The original Parallel ATA (PATA) interface was launched in 1986.  or an external drive bay via USB USB
 in full Universal Serial Bus

Type of serial bus that allows peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, digitizers, data gloves, etc.) to be easily connected to a computer.
. Designed for high reliability, the removable Tandberg RDX data cartridge houses a high-capacity mobile 2.5-inch hard disk drive in a ruggedized shock-proof mounting system. The Tandberg RDX cartridges are used like a traditional tape cartridge, with the advantages of standardized file systems, high-performance data transfer and file access found in a hard disk drive.

The Tandberg RDX cartridge capacity range currently is 40, 80 and 120 GB and future generations will follow the road map of 2.5-inch mobile hard disk drives.

"Adding the Tandberg RDX technology into Tandberg's product portfolio of SLR (1) (Scalable Linear Recording) A line of magnetic tape drives from Tandberg Data that evolved from the QIC Data Cartridge format. See QIC.

(2) (Single Lens Reflex) A camera that uses the same lens for viewing and shooting.
(TM) and LTO tape technology, automation and disk-based storage appliances strengthens and broadens our position in the data storage market from entry-level to enterprise-class data storage," said Gudmundur Einarsson, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Tandberg Data ASA.

"We chose Tandberg because of their top-tier OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  relationships, global distribution channel, low-cost manufacturing and reputation for high quality," said ProStor Systems CEO and President Steve Georgis. "These business strengths combine to give us a partner that will be first to market with ProStor's RDX technology."

The Tandberg RDX products are an ideal replacement for the current low-end tape technology such as Travan, DAT (1) (Dynamic Address Translator) A hardware circuit that converts a virtual memory address into a real address. See also DAT file.

(2) (Digital Audio Tape) A magnetic tape technology used for backing up data.
or 8mm tape user, where ease of use and cost are prioritized. Tandberg RDX technology delivers to customers the very best benefits of tape and disk without the risks inherent in either technology. Like tape, the Tandberg RDX cartridge is removable and portable for off-site storage, disaster recovery and archival applications. Also like tape, it can be safely archived for more than a decade and is an inexpensive backup and recovery solution. The Tandberg RDX cartridge looks and acts like tape and works seamlessly with most existing backup applications.

Tandberg RDX technology offers professional-class reliability that exceeds that of native disk drives. And because of its native 30 MB/sec data rate, Tandberg RDX technology reduces the traditional backup window from hours to minutes. For instance, it takes the Tandberg RDX system less than an hour to back up 80 GB of native data and milliseconds to access files. All this can be done with Tandberg RDX cartridges that will range in capacity from 40 GB to 400 GB, following the mobile 2.5-inch hard disk drive capacity roadmaps.

Tandberg RDX is both forward- and backward-compatible without limitation, which means future Tandberg RDX cartridges with ever-increasing capacities and faster data rates will work in legacy systems, preserving customer investments for years to come.

The Tandberg RDX products are now available for OEM evaluation and will be made available mid-Q3 2006 for the distribution market. The Tandberg RDX products will be manufactured and distributed through Tandberg Data's established and well-proven supply chain.
