Tandberg Data Announces Breakthrough LTO-4 Tape Autoloader.

Tandberg Data's Magnum 1x7 with LTO-4 Offers Groundbreaking Pricing, Industry-Leading Robotics, and Proven Reliability, Ideal For SMB and Departmental Installations

BOULDER, Colo. -- Tandberg Data Corporation (OSE: TAD), a leading global supplier of data protection and archiving technologies, today announced the availability of its Magnum 1x7 Autoloader with fourth-generation LTO([R]) tape drive technology (LTO-4). The Magnum 1x7, built with patented robotics systems recognized worldwide for reliability, includes a robust feature set and plug-and-play simplicity. The product's affordable pricing will allow SMBs and departmental users to consider LTO-4 automation over standalone tape devices.

The Magnum 1x7 Autoloader offers one LTO-4 tape drive and seven cartridge slots. With 4th generation LTO technology and Tandberg Data's award-winning robotics, this autoloader achieves data transfer speeds of up to 864 GB/hr compressed and capacity of up to 11.2 TB in a compact 2U form factor that conserves valuable data center space. An ideal first step into LTO-4 automation, the Magnum 1x7 provides a robust set of standard features, including a barcode reader, an Ethernet port for remote management - perfect for distributed office environments - and Symantec([R]) Backup Exec QuickStart Edition[TM] software, which is ideal for supporting tape drives and autoloaders in Windows and NetWare environments. Backup Exec QuickStart enables end-user file retrieval without complex IT intervention and can be easily upgraded through Symantec's worldwide sales channel to the core version of Symantec Backup Exec.

The Magnum 1x7 continues with Tandberg Data's philosophy of "ease of use" by offering an intuitive LCD interface to guide users through configuration, status, diagnostics, and help functions. In addition, unlike competitive products, the Magnum 1x7 was designed with the convenience of a field-upgradeable drive. The autoloader's elegant design allows existing Magnum 1x7 users to easily swap out their prior-generation LTO drive and install the new LTO-4 drive while the autoloader remains in its designated rack space. This feature extends users' hardware investment and dramatically reduces upgrade costs while immediately achieving new levels of capacity and speed with LTO-4 technology. The innovative "upgrade-in-the-field" capability is one of the many benefits of Tandberg Data's renowned engineering, widely recognized as the most intelligently designed automation robotics in the world.

With an estimated street price below $6,400, the Magnum 1x7 provides affordable automated LTO-4 performance and impressive list of standard features with no hidden add-on costs. The rack-mount kit, cables, and Symantec Backup Exec[TM] QuickStart Edition software and free On Site Service are all included.

"Tandberg Data has a long tradition of innovation in LTO automation" said Ken Juntunen, director of sales at Tandberg Data. "The Magnum 1x7 was a break-through product when we first launched it. Now with LTO-4, it continues to set new standards for price-performance ratios in the LTO automation category With very affordable pricing, unmatched reliability, and an impressive feature set, the Magnum 1x7 is a smart choice for network administrators seeking an LTO-4 automation solution with the lowest total cost of ownership in its category."

4(th) Generation LTO Features

The new LTO-4 tape drive provides 100% more capacity and 50% greater transfer speed than the popular LTO-3 drive, bringing native capacity to 800GB (1.6TB compressed) and native transfer speed to 120MB per second (240MB/sec compressed). The increased capacity and speed shortens the time needed for backup and restore processes - a key benefit for companies with increasing data storage requirements and shrinking backup windows. The LTO-4 drive outperforms all other tape drives in its class on the market today, allowing users to replace multiple drives with a single LTO-4 autoloader, which reduces points of failure in network architecture and lowers the total cost of ownership for tape drive hardware and media.

LTO-4 also offers a myriad of features to improve performance, reliability and manageability. Digital Speed Matching, a 256 MB buffer and Dynamic Compression all improve drive performance. Diagnostic routines, such as the Statistical Analysis and Reporting System, assist in isolating failures between media and hardware, and Adaptive Tape Threading protects against failures during cartridge loads by verifying tape speed, the tape spinning wheel, and modulating the tape thread by providing tension control. Independent tape loader and threader motors and positive pin retention ensure that the pin will be retained during a miss-pick. Graceful Dynamic Braking allows the reel motors to gradually decelerate, instead of stopping abruptly during an unexpected power down, prolonging the life of the media.

Pricing and Availability

The Magnum 1x7 Autoloader with LTO-4 is available immediately throughout the Americas via the company's network of distributors and resellers. The estimated street price of the Magnum 1x7 with LTO-4 is $6,399 and includes one-year on-site service (OSS) and a one-year warranty. An extension of both the warranty and OSS to two years is available as an option. Tandberg Data also has very competitive LTO-4 media pricing with an estimated street price of $145 per cartridge.
