Tanabe in $74 million agreement to develop and market marimastat.


ANNAPOLIS, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1996--British Biotech today announced that it has signed an agreement with Tanabe Seiyaku Co. Ltd. a leading Japanese pharmaceutical company, to develop and market marimastat, British Biotech's oral anti-cancer drug, in Japan.

Rights for additional Asian countries are under discussion. Under the agreement, Tanabe has made an initial payment to British Biotech British Biotech was a British based biotech company.

British Biotechnology Limited was founded in 1986 by former G D Searle managers Keith McCullagh and Brian Richards, [1]
 of US$7 million, to be followed by up to a further US$67 million, subject to the successful development and marketing of marimastat in Japan. In addition Tanabe will assume development of marimastat in Japan. Tanabe will receive exclusive marketing rights to marimastat in exchange for an attractive revenue-sharing arrangement which will result in significant payments to British Biotech on all Tanabe's sales of marimastat.

Marimastat, British Biotech's most important product, is currently undergoing a series of Phase III clinical trials in cancer patients in Europe and North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. . In addition, the company is continuing a series of Phase II trials with marimastat in Europe and North America in a wide range of different cancers. As a result of this agreement, Tanabe will commence the Japanese development program for marimastat in Japan immediately and is expected to start trials in cancer patients in 1997.

British Biotech intends to develop and market marimastat in Europe, the United States of America UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The name of this country. The United States, now thirty-one in number, are Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire,  and Canada.

Commenting on the Japanese licensing agreement, Dr. Keith McCullagh, British Biotech's chief executive, said: "We are delighted to announce this major partnership with Tanabe Seiyaku for the development and commercialization of marimastat in Japan.
