Tampa Bay Black Business Investment Corp. to receive additional funding.


TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1995--The Tampa Bay Tampa Bay, inlet of the Gulf of Mexico, 25 mi (40 km) long and 7 to 12 mi (11.3–19 km) wide, W Fla., separated from the Gulf by numerous small islands; it receives the Hillsborough River. St.  Black Business Investment Corp. (TBBBIC) will receive $150,000 of venture capital from the Florida Black Business Investment Board (Board).

The check will be presented in a ceremony on Friday, Aug. 11, 1995 at 11 a.m. at the St. Petersburg Junior College, Allstate Center, 3200 34th Street in St. Petersburg.

The Florida Legislature The Florida Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Florida. The Florida Constitution mandates a bicameral state legislature with an upper house Florida Senate of 40 members and a lower Florida House of Representatives of 120 members.  appropriated an additional $2 million in venture capital to the Board during its 1994 legislative session. Of this amount, each investment corporation is to receive $150,000. This action marks the first time new investment capital has been received since the program began in 1985. Additionally, investment corporations are now required to meet established criteria and sign investment agreements demonstrating how the funds will be used.

 can continue to meet the needs of Black businesses," said Judy Jones, Board executive director. "This furthers the commitment on the part of the state and the Board to ensure that the Tampa Bay BBIC can thrive and operate in the marketplace and level the playing field for black-owned businesses."

Presenting the check to TBBBIC Board Chairman Dr. David Welch C. David Welch is the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs of the United States. He served from 2001 to 2005 as the U.S. Ambassador to Egypt.

Florida's seven investment corporations are located in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Jacksonville and Tallahassee. They represent public-private partnerships between the state of Florida and financial institutions, designed to provide lending, loan guarantee, technical assistance and other services that ensure the development of African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  owned businesses.

To qualify for assistance, all eligible business applicants must be a commercial enterprise and at least 51 percent owned, operated, managed and controlled by African-Americans and demonstrate that they can compete in the market place. Applications for credit are made directly with the local investment corporation.
