Businesses in Denver, Cleveland can now abandon

circuit-switched based telephone networks to receive

benefits of truly enhanced, software-based IP telephony The two-way transmission of voice over a packet-switched IP network, which is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. The terms "IP telephony" and "voice over IP" (VoIP) are synonymous.

TalkingNets, the first telephony application service provider (ASP), today became the first telephony provider to go "beyond IP" to launch a true next-generation IP-based network using softswitch technology and the most advanced enhanced services platform available today.

TalkingNets rolled out its new services in Denver and Cleveland, the first markets within the company's planned deployment of 25 cities nationwide.

The TalkingNets next-generation network unleashes a whole new world of telephony services. No longer are customers limited to standard enhanced services such as caller ID A telephone company service that sends the caller's telephone number between the first and second ring of the call. If the calling number is not blocked, the calling number is displayed on the handset or base station of the called party.  and voice mail. Instead, consumers can receive local and long-distance telephony services with an exciting variety of enhanced applications such as personalized ring tones, number-specific call forwarding call forwarding

Such applications can only be supported by next-generation telephony networks that incorporate newly emerging standard network protocols such as Session Initiation Protocol (protocol) Session Initiation Protocol - (SIP) A very simple text-based application-layer control protocol. As the nation's first telephony ASP, TalkingNets will offer its services through channel partners such as Internet service providers Internet service provider (ISP)

The two service providers will serve as the first official TalkingNets channel partners in these cities.

The two companies will market the services to their existing broadband data customers. Both channel partners will tap into the TalkingNets next-generation network to offer their customers enhanced, business class voice services - without having to build out their own voice infrastructure and without having to connect to an incumbent carrier's tandem switch A telephone central office switch that links telco end offices together and does not connect to the customer directly. Also called a "Class 4 switch" or "TDM switch," a tandem switch is a computer that is specialized for TDM-based, circuit-switched telephone calls. .

The commercial roll out follows the successful conclusion of a Denver-based trial of TalkingNets' next-generation network, where several area businesses tested local and long-distance next-generation services provided through TalkingNets and its long-distance partner Level 3. Interfold participated in the trial as a channel partner, providing the TalkingNets service to several of its existing Internet customers.

"Our Internet customer trial participants loved the TalkingNets next-generation service - they kept asking us when they could buy the service permanently," said John Moore John Moore may be: Clergy

TalkingNets is also currently talking with additional channel partners in both cities that also wish to increase revenue and reduce churn by offering voice services to their existing data customers.

"Just one year ago, TalkingNets had a vision: To enable data service providers, which provide Internet services to more than 80 percent of small and medium-sized businesses, to stop being the `other' service provider - the one that just offers data, not voice," said John Philips

"We wanted to build a network that enabled ISPs and data CLECs to improve profits by offering unique voice services to their current small and medium-sized business customers - a market that has been largely ignored by the voice CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) An organization offering local telephone service that is not one of the traditional telephone companies. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed competition to the incumbent telcos (ILECs), enabling new companies (CLECs)  and incumbent carrier community."

"Today, we've made our vision a reality, reaching an industry milestone by launching the first true next-generation IP-based telephony network," Philips continued. "We've also reached a company milestone by moving from concept to revenue-producing commercial service in just 12 months."
