The profiles have been ported to Tality's upper protocol stack The set of protocols used in a communications network. A protocol stack is a prescribed hierarchy of software layers, starting from the application layer at the top (the source of the data being sent) to the data link layer at the bottom (transmitting the bits on the wire).  to form a comprehensive Bluetooth software design solution. In addition, Tality announced availability of a software debug To correct a problem in hardware or software. Debugging software means locating the errors in the source code (the program logic). Debugging hardware means finding errors in the circuit design (logical circuits) or in the physical interconnections of the circuits.  and test environment for their Bluetooth upper protocol stack. The combination of the application profiles and upper stack, supported by the debug environment, significantly reduces the time to develop and deliver a Bluetooth system.

Bluetooth application profiles - specified by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is the body that oversees the development of Bluetooth standards and the licensing of the Bluetooth technologies and trademarks to manufacturers.  - define a subset of the Bluetooth protocol for particular services and use-cases. The interoperability of two Bluetooth systems is guaranteed if each conforms to the same profile specification. The application profiles enable designers with no expertise in the operation of the Bluetooth protocol to develop applications software for Bluetooth systems. Prior to the availability of application profiles, a greater custom software development and porting effort was required, adding as much as six months to design time. Consequently, application profiles speed not only system design, but also the proliferation of the Bluetooth standard itself.

The application profiles immediately available from Tality include: Generic Access Profile

Tality expects to release over the coming months the Synchronization Profile, the Cordless Telephony Profile, Fax Profile, and LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. Deliverables include software architecture and design documentation, API definition, full source code, test purposes and test scripts, among others.

"The development of our application profiles draws heavily on the design expertise that we have accumulated in over 30 Bluetooth-enabled system and chip designs and on our expertise in demonstrating interoperability at Bluetooth SIG UnPlugFests," said Simon Jones, Director of Tality's Bluetooth Business Group. "They also leverage our broader design expertise in systems such as cellular handsets, information appliances and cordless telephony, to name but a few. Tality's PC-hosted Bluetooth debug and test environment speeds the debug of system designs that utilize Tality's upper protocol stack and any available extensions, such as application profiles. The environment monitors stack activity - in both free-running and single-step modes - and traces responses back to their command line stimuli, with associated parameters. Moreover, multiple external applications may simultaneously use the debug environment as a service provider, utilizing the environment's simple interfaces for commands and data.

TALITY AND BLUETOOTH

Tality is a market leader in providing engineering services to companies developing systems with the emerging Bluetooth technology. Tality also develops intellectual property for use in customer designs, and licenses it to customers designing Bluetooth systems themselves. Tality has been a member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group since 1998. It is one of only five adopter members invited by the promoters to join the Radio1 Improvement Subgroup, which is chartered with making significant enhancements to the Bluetooth 1.x specification.
