Talarian's SmartSockets Increases Scalability and Performance of Fraud Detection Application on MCI's Telecommunications Network.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1997--Talarian(R) Corp. today announced that MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices. It provides commands and functions to open, play and close the device.

, the second largest carrier in the $80 billion U.S. long distance market, has selected Talarian's SmartSockets(TM) publish-subscribe message-oriented middleware Message-oriented middleware comprises a category of inter-application communication software that generally relies on asynchronous message-passing as opposed to a request/response metaphor.  to increase the performance and scalability of fraud detection applications on MCI's telecommunications network A telecommunications network is a of telecommunications links and nodes arranged so that messages may be passed from one part of the network to another over multiple links and through various nodes.  worldwide.

Analysts estimate that total telecommunications industry losses as a result of fraud for 1997 will be $4 billion. MCI has been using SmartSockets in various other applications, including trending and analysis systems as well as several network management applications.

MCI will use Smart Sockets See SmartSockets.  in its new next-generation fraud detection system known as Sheriff. Sheriff uses a series of detection algorithms to analyze calls on MCI's network for fraudulent activity. The fraud detection system architecture offers both scalability and distributability to match varying network environments.

MCI plans to deploy Sheriff during the final quarter of this year. British Telecom The telephone and communications carrier that provides services in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It used to be a division of the British Post Office, but was privatized in 1984 under Margaret Thatcher's administration. , which is scheduled to merge with MCI by the year's end, plans to roll out Sheriff in its network beginning in third quarter 1997 and will provide the system to the companies' strategic partners and alliance members next year. SmartSockets will be used to link distributed software components comprising Sheriff.

"The tools provided by SmartSockets help MCI as we monitor millions of calls a day for fraudulent calling patterns, enabling us to identify and stop fraud quickly and efficiently," said Hans Van Arkel, senior manager for Fraud Systems Development at MCI. BT and MCI estimate that the joint development of Sheriff will save the companies $11.5 million over the next 12 months through a combination of lower development costs and fraud reduction.

About SmartSockets

SmartSockets publish-subscribe message-oriented middleware allows software programs to communicate quickly, reliably and securely across LANs, WANs and the Internet. It offers 100 percent fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

(architecture) fault tolerance - 1. The ability of a system or component to continue normal operation despite the presence of hardware or software faults. This often involves some degree of redundancy.

with high performance by pushing messages out to interested subscribers, whereas other middleware solutions either require messages be pulled from a queue or requested from a server. Complete fault tolerance reduces many of the risks inherent in building a distributed system, and SmartSockets is the only middleware solution that has the features to achieve it. They are hot failover, dynamic message routing and guaranteed message delivery.
