Taking on bigger role in the world of music publishing.

It's all about people skills, Malik Levy says. And the new director of writer/publisher relations for Broadcast Music Inc. said he intends to use those skills in representing artists on songwriting issues such as publishing and licensing.

"It is not really part of the job," he said, "but making that extra phone call to some publisher for a new kid is easy and keeps people happy."

Levy's experience includes a stint as director of A&R Urban at Capitol Records, vice president of A&R at Loud Records and president of Roster Super Co., which he co-founded.

That last move came in response to a particularly bad year in the music business. Levy decided to start Roser, a consulting company that helps independent record, film and clothing companies with the marketing and promotion of their products. Clients include T-Mobile and Playboy. The company is now run by Levy's two partners, Safari Owolo and Shane Mooney.

At his new job, Levy will be working with songwriters and publishers and boosting Broadcast Music's urban music programs. He will also scout new talent.

"I also help artists develop," he said. "If they are talented and know where they want to go, I help them go through doors they normally won't be able to open on their own."

Broadcast Music is a non-profit group that represents more than 300,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers.

Levy went to college at Southern University in Louisiana for two years before dropping out and moving back to L.A. He lives in the Miracle Mile area and is married with two daughters, 11 and 4. Trips to amusement parks normally take up almost all of his family's spare time.
