This book is like one of the Sierra Club's trail guidebooks, well construed by an expert who has been there more than once.

After Ms. Pollin, who is a social worker, lost a son and daughter to congenital heart disease congenital heart disease, any defect in the heart present at birth. There is evidence that some congenital heart defects are inherited, but the cause of most cases is unknown. , she was disappointed to find that mental-health professionals she encountered had little experience in dealing with chronic illness. Consequently, she founded the Linda Pollin Foundation at Harvard Medical School Harvard Medical School (HMS) is one of the graduate schools of Harvard University. It is a prestigious American medical school located in the Longwood Medical Area of the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. . In conjunction with Children's Hospital A children's hospital is a hospital which offers its services exclusively to children. The number of children's hospitals proliferated in the 20th century, as pediatric medical and surgical specialties separated from internal medicine and adult surgical specialties.  in Boston, it helps train mental-health professionals to deal with the social and emotional needs of chronically ill people.

In this book, you are told how best to deal with your chronic illness. But many other issues such as effective doctor-patient relationships, mastering common fears, and establishing attainable goals are discussed. Ms. Pollin takes things a step further by discussing how to identify coping styles, decrease anxiety and stress, and maximize personal resources.
