), announced today the release of SNiFF+ for Windows 95 and NT.

SNiFF+ for Windows is a suite of development tools that enable developers to manage complex cross-platform application development. With its open architecture, SNiFF+ for Windows is the only environment that gives developers the flexibility to integrate their choice of editors, compilers, debuggers, and source code managers with a consistent GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface. .

SNiFF+ offers the significant advantage of supporting multiple-language development by providing browsers and cross-referencers for C, C++, Java, CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  IDL (1) (Interface Definition Language) A language used to describe the interface to a routine or function. For example, objects in the CORBA distributed object environment are defined by an IDL, which describes the services performed by the object and how the data  and FORTRAN, that enable code comprehension and reverse engineering.

SNiFF+ also provides a language sensitive editor Language Sensitive Editor - (LSE) A language-sensitive editor from DEC.  with semantic navigation, a documentation builder for code reuse Code reuse, also called software reuse, is the use of existing software, or software knowledge, to build new software. Ad hoc reuse has been practiced from the earliest days of programming. Programmers have always reused sections of code, templates, functions, and procedures. , and a Unix-like make system. SNiFF+ for Windows interfaces to a multitude of software development tools such as revision control systems, build systems, CASE tools and run-time testing tools, and it can be customized to enforce development policies.

"Coding for both Unix and Windows APIs requires careful code re-structuring as well as maintaining platform-dependent and independent code. Until now developers and OEMs have needed different software tools for Unix and Windows projects because of inherent differences in the two operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. ," said Gil Chita, Director of Marketing at TakeFive Software.

"We are delighted to introduce our powerful cross-platform development solution, specifically designed to assist those simultaneously developing on Unix and Windows platforms, those Unix developers that are migrating to NT and those developers who need to get a handle on Window applications that continue to grow ever larger and more complex."

Windows 95 and NT developers will be able to realize the same benefits that Unix developers have come to expect from SNiFF+: superior code comprehension, higher productivity and improved software quality. SNiFF+ for Windows has the same feature set as SNiFF+ for Unix so there is no time lost to costly and unnecessary re-training.

SNiFF+ Technology

SNiFF+'s parsing See parse.

parsing - parser
technology enables it to handle large applications and incorporate the latest language standards such as C++ templates and exception handling. TakeFive Software recently enhanced the SNiFF+ Java and FORTRAN parsers, significantly improving speed and flexibility. Every change to the code and documentation is immediately reflected in the SNiFF+ environment, saving developers the time of relinking and recompiling.

Fault tolerance is built in so that even incomplete and uncompilable code is parsed. This highly optimized error recovery strategy makes SNiFF+ the most robust environment available for cross platform, multiple-language development.

With its CORBA-based open architecture, SNiFF+ provides seamless integration of new tools into one easy to use graphical environment, enabling OEMs to offer their customers a development environment customized to meet their specific needs.
