Global LEDs and LED displays production value is set to grow by 75 percent between 2004 and 2008, market analysts Communications Industry Researchers and iSuppli forecast. Mainland China and Taiwan segments are expected to be at the forefront of this growth as manufacturers continue to set up production bases in the region.

Driven mainly by portable electronic devices, particularly mobilephones, PDAs and digital cameras, as well as applications in indoor and outdoor lighting and illumination, automotive electronics, and navigation, aviation, railway and traffic systems, production in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong is expected to jump significantly in the next few years.

In mainland China alone, output reached about 50 billion units in 2004.Riding on large-scale government initiatives, output is expected to hit record 65 billion units between 2006 and 2007.

Taiwan, meanwhile, is strengthening its position in the global LED industry. According to the Industrial Technology Research Institute, the region's market share worldwide for LEDs increased to 25 percent -- ranked second, behind Japan's 48 percent.

On production trends

--An emerging trend in the automotive industry is the use of HB LEDs -- which are more cost efficient and longer-lasting -- instead of fluorescent lights. The majority of mainland China makers, including Taiwan- and Hong Kong owned companies based in the region, have the capability to produce HB LEDs.

--Taiwan is claimed to be the global leader in HB LEDs production, followed by Japan and mainland China. However, the influx of more foreign LED makers in mainland China is expected to push the mainland to the number one position, to account for almost 30 percent of the world market.

--One-third of LED production among mainland China makers is represented by chip HB LEDs, particularly for backlighting, portable devices and automotive use.

--In response to the strongly rising demand from the portable devices segment, both mainland China and Taiwan manufacturers are aligning their chip LED production. Mainland China manufacturers, for instance, are beginning to produce LED chips.

--Aside from Guangdong, LEDs and LED display production is also concentrated in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, Shanghai and Fujian.

On industry composition

--The LEDs and LED displays industry in mainland China comprises at least 500 manufacturers. In 2004, domestic suppliers accounted for 25 billion units of LEDs and LED displays produced in mainland China, while foreign-owned companies turned out at least 20 billion units.

--The supplier base in Taiwan is made up of about 30 manufacturers.

--Of the 68 manufacturers included in this report, the majority or 72 percent are mainland China companies; 22 percent, Taiwan; and 6 percent, Hong Kong.
