Tafel bows out. (Politics).

With the GOP's power at its zenith, now may seem like an odd time for Rich Tafel to leave Log Cabin log cabin or log house, style of home typical of the American pioneer on the Western frontier of the United States in the great westward expansion after 1765. It was constructed with few tools, usually an axe or an adz and an auger. All the fastenings were of wood. The log walls were chinked with mud to make them reasonably impervious to the wind. Republicans, the gay political group he cofounded 12 years ago.

"I've always been drawn to underdog status," said Tafel, the group's executive director. "As [Republicans] have become the majority party, I felt we needed a new person with new energy."

That new person is Patrick Guerriero, who sought the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor of Massachusetts before pulling out of the race last spring. Guerriero assumes the new position in January.

Tafel will stay in Washington, D.C., where he is working on a program for welfare recipients transitioning to full employment.
