Capacity Enhancements

Tadpole-RDI Inc., an industry leader in portable Unix workstations and servers, today announced significant enhancements to its UltraSPARC IIi(TM)-driven VoyagerIIi(TM) portable servers.

Effective today, the phone book-sized portable server will be shipped with an integrated audio and video capability providing Tadpole tadpole, larval, aquatic stage of any of the amphibian animals. After hatching from the egg, the tadpole, sometimes called a polliwog, is gill-breathing and legless and propels itself by means of a tail.  customers with "on-board" video allowing the PCI slot to be used, for example, for dual resolution video output, or increased ethernet connectivity. VoyagerIIi's removable disk capacity has also been increased to 100GB -- a threefold increase over the past nine months.

The enhancements also enable Tadpole-RDI to extend compute-intensive applications of the portable server to markets where the addition of dual screen monitors is a must. The oil and gas industries, financial trading rooms and corporate training are typical examples.

VoyagerIIi has proven one of Tadpole-RDI's most successful product developments to date. Launched in mid-1998, it brought portable Sun Solaris(TM) Operating Environment and UltraSPARC IIi technology-based computing technology to the server market for the first time. Built around Sun's UltraSPARC IIi processor and Solaris Operating Environment, VoyagerIIi is binary compatible with Solaris-based applications, offers all the power, features and capabilities of a desktop, while weighing in at just 10 lbs., and about the size of a phone book (12.7 x 10.2 x 4.0 inches).

VoyagerIIi increases productivity of mobile workers across multiple industries and military markets. Blue-chip volume customers include Ericsson, BMC Software, Nortel and Lucent. Among users in U.S. Federal markets are the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marines. A growing market for the portable server is training; for example, real-time customer management and billing software vendor Portal Software recently adopted the VoyagerIIi server for off-site customer training.

A full specification VoyagerIIi now boasts 440MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  UltraSPARC IIi processors, RAM to 1GB, and disk capacity to 100GB. Pricing starts at $12,410, exclusive of sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government. . Product availability with on-board audio/graphics enhancement as standard -- immediate.

Una Richens, vice president of sales and marketing at Tadpole-RDI, commented: "Portable Unix has a growing role in the mobile computing infrastructures of industry and federal markets alike. The timely upgrade of Tadpole-RDI offerings, such as the addition of an on-board audio and video capability to VoyagerIIi servers, further extends their applications beyond traditional corporate boundaries."

Sun Microsystems On The Latest VoyagerIIi Enhancements

"These latest enhancements to the VoyagerIIi offering again demonstrate Tadpole-RDI's commitment to portable UltraSPARC processor and Solaris Operating Environment-based computing," said Susan Kunz, director of product marketing at Sun Microsystems' Processor Products Group. She added: "With VoyagerIIi, customers on the move should be able to undertake even more business-critical tasks wherever and whenever the need arises."

VoyagerIIi Value

The full benefits of increased productivity and lower operating costs associated with VoyagerIIi portability for Sun users are laid out on Tadpole-RDI's Web site. Visit http://www.tadpolerdi.com/rdi/products/tco/tco01.htm.

VoyagerIIi servers can be configured with all the features needed to meet the needs of enterprise software and e-commerce application vendors. Powered by 440MHz UltraSPARC IIi/2Mbyte E-cache processors (SPECint:17,9 - SPECfp: 22.7), standard ECC memory is 256MB and can be extended to a 1GB. The robust 2.5" disks incorporate four high-speed Ultra-DMA controllers, each supporting a single Ultra-IDE disk and are arranged as two removable twin packs. The twin packs consist of two 25GB disks, allowing for configurations of 50GB or 100GB.

VoyagerIIi servers are shipped with Solaris 7(TM), 2.6, or 2.5.1 as operating system, together with OpenWindows 3x, AutoNET(TM) software tools plus NTP (Network Time Protocol) A TCP/IP protocol used to synchronize the real time clock in computers, network devices and other electronic equipment that is time sensitive.
