Tabarzadi was once one of the leading student leaders and dissidents in the country. He was repeatedly arrested and held for months at a time. He was last arrested in December 2009 during the crackdown that followed the 2009 presidential election.

Tabarzadi was one of the founders of the Union of Islamic Students and Alumni Associations as well as the Democratic Front of Iran. He ran several student publications such as Payame Daneshju and Neday-e Daneshju.

Tabarzadi was sentenced to 10 years in prison for "propaganda propaganda, systematic manipulation of public opinion, generally by the use of symbols such as flags, monuments, oratory, and publications. Modern propaganda is distinguished from other forms of communication in that it is consciously and deliberately used to  against the regime and insuiting the Leader."
