TYSON SHOULD BE BANNED FOR LIFETIME; BUT BET ON A REMATCH.

Byline: Terence Moore Atlanta Journal Constitution

Given Mike Tyson's tribute to Dracula Saturday night against Evander Holyfield Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield (born October 19, 1962 in Atmore, Alabama) is a professional boxer from the United States and a multiple world champion in both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions.  at the MGM MGM

Grand, the only iron that Iron Mike should carry is not in his nickname but on his legs. He's a thug. The same goes for Andrew Golota or Roberto Duran. All are accomplished at turning a boxing ring into a prison cell.

Still, none of those thugs ever went for an opponent's ears while losing a fight. Tyson did so twice in the third round. Then after he chewed away part of Holyfield's right ear, Tyson shoved his opponent from behind during a timeout while Holyfield walked toward his corner.

That Holyfield won the fight after that third round through Tyson's disqualification wasn't enough.  Council and others need to ban Tyson from boxing for life.

After that, somebody outside of the thugs who hang around him should have a long talk with this thug who evolved from Dracula to volcano following his disqualification. Tyson exploded so badly in the ring that he battled police officers and those on his own team while threatening to charge Holyfield's corner.

``He's spinning right now,'' said Holyfield, his ears still aching from Tyson's teeth marks. ``He's going to need somebody who will be a true friend to him, but the fact is that he brought it on himself. I'd be surprised if he ever fights again.''

I'm worried, though, even with Team Holyfield saying exactly the right things when it comes to the possibility of their guy doing the unthinkable by facing Tyson a third time after two victories.

They're saying no, no, no.

Definitely, no.

, laughing and shaking his head, ``Why even ask me a silly question like that?''

That's all good, but I'm still worried. In the world of boxing, where strong comments today have a way of becoming forgotten tomorrow, the odds of seeing a Holyfield-Tyson III someday are shockingly low.

Money is more powerful in boxing than common sense. As a result, a third meeting would bring Holyfield at least another $35 million. And, yes, the public definitely would pay to see it all. Never underestimate the desire of the masses to view either the bloodiest of car wrecks or the possibility of some guy biting off another guy's ears again.

doesn't believe the sport can overcome this damage. The rules, he says, don't allow for reactions like Tyson's.

``The rules and regulations of boxing were followed,'' he said. ``It was properly dealt with. So from that standpoint, it doesn't give boxing a black eye.''

Here's why I'm really worried: Holyfield is the ultimate man of compassion. So let's say that Tyson decides to repent of his sins. He asks for another chance, and Holyfield quickly nods in forgiveness.

``That could always happen,'' Thomas says, lowering those odds just a little bit more.

THE APOLOGY

Tyson said he was sorry for biting Holyfield and asked not to be banned from boxing for life. He also said he was seeking psychological help.

``Evander, I am sorry. You are a champion and I respect that. I am only saddened that this fight did not go further so that the boxing fans of the world might see for themselves who would come out on top,'' Tyson said.

HOLYFIELD'S REACTION

Responding to Tyson, Holyfield called it ``a good gesture. . . . I have no hatred. Things like that can happen, but if you get paid that much money, they're not supposed to.''

NO PAYDAY

Tyson's $30 million check is still in a safe at the Nevada Athletic Commission offices, where it is being held pending the disciplinary hearing.

THE OUTCRY

President Clinton said he watched the fight and ``I was horrified hor·ri·fy

by it and I think the American people should be.''

Nevada Athletic Commission phone lines were tied up all day Monday by callers angry with the outcome of the fight. Commission executive director Marc Ratner said there were 450 calls from people ``demanding their money back and saying Tyson should be banned from boxing.''

A San Francisco lawyer who bought the fight on pay-per-view said he planned a class action lawsuit class action lawsuit
