TWO-DAY CARNIVAL CELEBRATES PURIM.

Byline: Brent Hopkins Staff Writer

WOODLAND HILLS - Hundreds of revelers converged upon Taft High School on Saturday, getting an early start on Temple Kol Tikvah's Purim celebration.

A Jewish holiday or Jewish Festival is a day or series of days observed by Jews as a holy or secular commemoration of an important event in Jewish history.
, the temple organized a two-day carnival that continues from noon until 11 p.m. today - among a dozen scheduled today across the Valley.

The first look at the bash Saturday was a festive one: children clutching prizes they'd won from midway booths, barkers drawing in new competitors and couples holding hands.

``It's fun for the whole family,'' said Jake Bellamy, 24, of Canoga Park, chuckling as he took a break from shooting darts, a huge stuffed animal

``We were just driving by and saw the Ferris wheel Ferris wheel, amusement park ride. It consists of a power-operated wheel that is about 50 ft (15 m) in diameter. It has two rims that are parallel to and equidistant from the shaft about which the wheel rotates. ,'' said his companion, Raven Lewis, walking alongside with her children. ``It looked like fun.''

The carnival has been an annual event for the temple for more than 25 years. During ceremonies today, congregants honor the ancient story of Esther, who exposed treachery Treachery

Organizers of Kol Tikvah's event said the healthy turnout was expected to grow significantly today.

``We're trying to get the whole community involved,'' said Karen Susman, the temple's director of education.

The air certainly reflected that, with the aroma of carne asada

Though the focus was geared toward holiday celebration, a variety of cultures was represented.

Taking up the Purim tradition of noisemaking was local quintet Under Cover - though its brand of heavy metal was a tad different from the traditional noise made by a hand-held gragger.

Lead singer Jaime Almanza, 20, winded but smiling after the performance, was glad to be part of the show.

``We had a couple problems at first,'' he said, surveying the still-cheering crowd with a smile. ``But we shut 'em down pretty good. And we'll be back tomorrow.''
