TWO TOP HORSES ARE RETIRED : NORTHERN SPUR, AFTERNOON DEELITES HAVE INJURIES.

Northern Spur Northern Spur (foaled 1991 in Ireland) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who raced in France and the United States. Bred at Robert Sangster's Swettenham Stud in Swettenham, Cheshire, England, he was a son of the champion sire Sadler's Wells and out of the mare, Fruition. , the 1995 national turf champion, and Afternoon Deelites, the winter-book favorite for the '95 Kentucky Derby, have been retired with injuries, their trainers said.

Afternoon Deelites was scratched from the Triple Bend Breeders' Cup Handicap, a sprint on Sunday's Hollywood Gold Cup The Hollywood Gold Cup is a Grade I stakes race for thoroughbred horses inaugurated in 1938 at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California. Under a syndication deal announced while his '95 comeback was uncertain, Afternoon Deelites will go to stud at Airdrie Stud, former Kentucky Gov. Brereton Jones' farm in Midway, Ky.

Breeding plans for Northern Spur have not been announced.

The 5-year-old son of Sadler's Wells came out of a third-place finish to Sandpit in the Caesars International Handicap at Atlantic City on June 22 with a slab fracture and a crack in his right knee.

Owned by Oaklawn Park chairman Charles Cella, Northern Spur was bred in Ireland and began his career in France before winning the '95 Oak Tree Invitational at Santa Anita and the Breeders' Cup Turf The Breeders' Cup Turf is a Weight for Age Thoroughbred horse race on turf for three-year-olds and up.
