TWO SHORTSTOPS BATTLE FOR ANGELS' BACKUP JOB.

One might think the shortstops in camp would see Gary Gary, city (1990 pop. 116,646), Lake co., NW Ind., a port of entry on Lake Michigan; inc. 1909. But that's not necessarily true for the season. ``Guys in my situation come to camp having to do everything they can to begin with,'' Huson said. ``There's no margin for error. Even if Gary didn't get hurt, there's still no margin for error.

``For us, it's a battle every day; it's a battle every year.''

Huson and Rivera have been around a while; Huson, 34, has played professionally since 1986. Rivera, 35, has played professionally since 1982.

``People don't realize it's easy for starters to come to camp,'' Huson said. ``It's hard for part-time players. If I don't perform for six weeks (during spring training), I'm done.''

Huson and Rivera have split the starts at shortstop in the Angels' first five Cactus League games, Huson starting three of the five. Huson is 2 for 9 and has not made an error. Rivera is 2 for 5 with one error.
