TWO PENNSYLVANIA LABOR UNIONS ENDORSE ARLEN SPECTER
 FOR RE-ELECTION IN NOVEMBER
PHILADELPHIA, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Two powerful Pennsylvania labor unions, representing more than 143,000 workers, today endorsed U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) for re-election in November.
The two unions are the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters, which represent 55 local unions throughout the state, and Local 1069 of the United Auto Workers Union.
In announcing his endorsement, Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters President John P. Morris said, "Arlen Specter has shown real leadership, toughness, and independence in fighting for working men and women in the United States Senate."
The Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters represents approximately 140,000 workers.
Tony Forte, president of Local 1069, which represents workers at the Boeing plants in Ridley Township, Pa., and Wilmington, Del., said his union was backing Specter "not only because of his hard work to retain the V-22 program at Boeing, but because of his demonstrated high regard for the working men and women of Pennsylvania."
Local 1069 of the United Auto Workers has more than 3,200 members.
Morris pointed out Specter's efforts on striker replacement, family and medical leave, and literacy training as just a few of the reasons behind the endorsement.
"Time and again," said Morris, "Arlen Specter has proved that he is just a phone call away. He has gone to bat for Teamster members on cases before the National Labor Relations Board; he has helped get our members literacy training so they could get their commercial drivers licenses; and he has been a strong supporter of family and medical leave, child care, and other efforts to better the lives of all workers.
"It is important for Pennsylvanians to realize that Senator Specter has some very powerful committee positions, such as Appropriations, and we are going to need him representing us in the tough battles ahead."
Forte said, "Senator Specter has always been our friend and we feel we owe him in return. We will do all we can to assure his re-election."
Specter thanked the unions for their endorsements, noting that their help will be "tremendously important at the polls in November."
