TWO ORDERED TO FACE TRIAL IN '04 DEATH ROBBERY CHARGES ALSO FILED.

LANCASTER - A prison inmate and another man have been ordered to stand trial for murder in the fatal beating of a construction worker during a December 2004 robbery behind a Lancaster bar.

, 43, both of Lancaster are charged with the Dec. 16 slaying of 44-year-old Augustin Juarez, who was attacked and robbed in an alley behind the Britisher in the 800 block of West Avenue I.

Juarez appeared to be the victim of a random robbery, homicide investigators said.

Each defendant was being held without bail.

Before being charged in Juarez's slaying, Buford was in prison in Tehachapi, serving time for an unrelated offense. Ward was arrested in July on a no-bail murder warrant in downtown Lancaster.

Buford was sent to prison in April to serve a 16-month sentence for vehicle theft and drug possession. He had convictions in 1999 and 2000 for transporting drugs or possession of drugs for sale, state prison records show.

Deputies said Juarez was unconscious and not breathing when they arrived. He had suffered one or more blows to the back of the head. Juarez was rushed to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Coroner's officials said his wallet was found next to his body.

Juarez's relatives told investigators that the victim usually carried several hundred dollars on him, detectives said.
