TWO KEY EXECUTIVES JOIN DELL; NEW CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, HEAD OF WORLDWIDE OPERATIONS BRING BROAD CORPORATE EXPERIENCE

    AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 16 ~PRNewswire~ -- The board of directors o f Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ: DELL) has elected Thomas J. Meredith to chief financial officer, and L. Scott Flaig to senior vice president of worldwide operations responsible for worldwide manufacturing and materials.
    Both Mr. Meredith and Mr. Flaig report directly to Michael Dell, chairman and chief executive officer, bringing to seven the number of executives on Mr. Dell's senior management team.
    Mr. Meredith, 42, joins Dell from Sun Microsystems, Inc., where he served as vice president and treasurer for this $3.6-billion provider of distributed computing products and services.  Mr. Flaig, 48, comes to Dell from the professional services firm Ernst & Young, where he was national director of manufacturing and high technology industry services following nine years with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC).

    In his position as vice president and treasurer for Sun, Mr. Meredith played a key role in developing the company's capital structure and financing strategies.  He directed all treasury operations including Sun's domestic and international cash portfolio, which increased from $58 million to $1.1 billion during his tenure.
    Before joining Sun in 1990, he spent nine years with Amdahl Corporation, most recently as co-founder and general manager of Amdahl Capital Corporation, a captive financing company for Amdahl's mainframe computer systems.
    His previous background also includes positions as director of tax research and planning for Castle and Cooke, Inc., and as a senior tax consultant for Arthur Young & Company.
    Mr. Meredith received his master's of law degree in taxation in 1977 from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.; his Juris Doctor degree in 1975 from Duquesne University School of Law, Pittsburgh, Penn., and his bachelor's degree in political science in 1972 from St. Francis College, Loretto, Penn.  He is admitted to practice law in California; Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, and is a member of the Financial Executives' Institute.
    Flaig Brings Wide Range of Operational Experience.
    In his capacity as national director of manufacturing and high technology industry services for Ernst & Young, Mr. Flaig developed worldwide manufacturing strategies for companies spanning the spectrum from high technology to consumer packaged goods.  He also directed all of the firm's manufacturing~high technology industry services, working with most of the blue-chip computer companies in the nation.
    Previously, he served for nine years with Digital Equipment Corporation in a series of progressively key positions.  During his tenure with DEC, Mr. Flaig was director of the advanced systems group, director of manufacturing for the telecommunications group, director of materials for the computer systems group, and director of quality and industrial engineering for computer systems.
    His previous background includes a decade of materials and plant management for Xerox Corporation, and positions in production planning with GTE Electronics.
    He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1966 from the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa.  He is the author of the book, Integrated Manufacturing: Transforming the Organization through People, Process and Technology, to be released in early December.
    He currently serves as an advisory board member to the Master's in Manufacturing program of the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill., and to the Whitmore School of Business at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H.  He is a member of the Council on Competitiveness and of the National Association of Manufacturers, based in Washington, D.C.
