TWICE THE VICE OUT OF DISTAFF.

Byline: Daily News

Twice the Vice became the latest Breeders' Cup favorite to be sidelined, dropping out of the $1 million Distaff distaff: see spinning. with a stress fracture above her left front ankle.

Trainer Ron Ellis said Sunday morning at Santa Anita that the leg was X-rayed Saturday because, although the 6-year-old wasn't limping, a small knot on the ankle hadn't gone down since her second-place finish to Sharp Cat in the Oct. 19 Lady's Secret. Twice the Vice, a winner of 12 of 23 races and $1.4 million, was to be retired after the Breeders' Cup anyway.

Ellis, 37, a product of Monroe High in North Hills, might have rivaled Patrick Byrne for Breeders' Cup Rookie of the Year. But ankle chips knocked Benchmark out of the $4 million Classic, and Exotic Wood is on the waiting list for the $1 million Sprint.
