TVA SPONSORS 'TAKE OUR DAUGHTERS TO WORK DAY'

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- What job opportunities exist for women in the utility industry? Can the?rate power plants, be a part of a power line crew, or manage a utility's financial or executive functions?
These questions and more will be answered by scores of Tennessee Valley Authority female employees when the agency hosts 40 young women on Wednesday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The TVA employees and potential employees-to-be will take part in "Take Our Daughters To Work Day," a national public education campaign sponsored by the Ms. Foundation for Women. The program, aimed at nine- to-15-year-olds, is designed to "expose employers to the talent pool of the 21st century" and to enhance the self-worth of America's young women.
TVA's program will introduce the young women to the diversity of jobs available within the agency, including "nontraditional" positions such as steam fitters, laborers and power plant operators. The young women also will meet some of TVA's highest ranking female executives.
Mary Cartwright, TVA's executive vice president, supports the program's objectives. "TVA's workforce is currently 24 percent female, and we need to implement initiatives to continue to increase that statistic," she said. "This program will introduce young women to the variety of career opportunities at TVA, some which they might not otherwise have considered."
The 40 young visitors, who are students at three of TVA's "adopted" schools in Knoxville, will begin their day at TVA's Knoxville-based corporate headquarters. There they will meet some of the agency's female executives and be paired with their "mentors-for-the-day." The young women and their mentors will then spend an hour together alone exploring interests and touring the corporate offices.
Later that morning the young women will travel to TVA's Bull Run Fossil Plant in Clinton, Tenn., where they will participate in a "Lunch & Learn" session with TVA women who have "nontraditional" jobs. The group will then tour the fossil plant and view a demonstration by a power line maintenance crew.
TVA has provided participating schools with the curriculum guidelines prepared by the Ms. Foundation for "Take Our Daughters To Work Day." The guides are designed to help teachers prepare students for their visit and to initiate discussions with them regarding their views about gender and the roles of men and women in society. TVA's Adopt-A-School coordinators also will visit the students before April 28 to help them explore their career interests.
