TV GUIDE TO FASHION : LOOKING FOR CHANNEL CHIC? TUNE IN HERE ...

Byline: Barbara De Witt Daily News Fashion Editor

Talk about prime-time panache.

Check out your television guide and you'll see numerous new sources for planning your fashion strategy, from back-to-school clothes to black-tie ensembles.

At the head of the class is ABC's ``Clueless clue·less

over what to wear to that annual benefit ball? Tune in to ``Mr. and Mrs. Smith'' on CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast. . Talk about stylin'. ``Mr. and Mrs. Smith'' is a virtual parade of designer fashions for all your black-tie affairs, with a big hint that white dinner jackets are in again.

Remember how great Marlo Thomas looked in the '70s in ``That Girl''? Like, she was this poor starving actress, but wow, did she have her fashion act together. To see what ``That Girl'' looks like in '96, 'mote over to NBC's ``Suddenly Susan.'' Brooke Shields, who made Calvin Klein jeans a household item a few years back, looks terrific in everything and will undoubtedly send women running to Victoria's Secret for those satin pajamas pajamas

and smoking jackets with the hope they'll look just like the gorgeous Shields. As if!

Got a hot date, but you're on a budget? Switch the channel to Fox's ``Party Girl,'' where you'll see Christine Taylor as a modern Holly Golightly, shopping her little heart out for club clothes that beg to be noticed. Besides glitzy glitz   Informal

,'' which reinforces the idea that bridesmaid dresses with bows are, like, worse than boring. More funky fashions for clubcrawlers can be found on Fox's ``Lush Life,'' about two Madonna wanna-bes who run around in lacy peignoirs and patent leather boots with spike heels.

Dress-for-success advice is rampant on the tube this fall, but it's not entirely current. For instance, in ABC's ``Life's Work'' sitcom, Lisa Ann Walter would have us believe that business suits are supposed to be worn a size too small, but ``Spin City'' (also on ABC) is on the cutting edge. It's star, Michael J. Fox, looks like a GQ model in monochromatic monochromatic /mono·chro·mat·ic/ (-kro-mat´ik)
