Through a grant from the California State Libraries The California State Library collects, preserves, generates and disseminates a wide array of information. It was founded in 1850 by the California State Legislature. Today, it is the central reference and research library for state government and the Legislature. , the library now offers Live Homework Help to students in fourth through 12th grades from 1 p.m to closing Monday through Saturday.

The program is a service of Tutor.com, and would cost $99.99 per month if parents signed up from home, but students who visit the library can use the service free and be connected to a tutor for up to 20 minutes of live help.

Library Manager Susan Broman said she has received a good response from those she has told about the program since it became available at the beginning of January.

``So far it's been really positive. The students seem really interested - and their parents are even more interested,'' Broman said.

Children and young adults visiting the library simply log on to tutor.com, enter their grade level and the subject they need help in, and they are instantly connected to an expert tutor. Students can receive help in math, science, social studies and English.

``It's similar to being in a chat room. The student and the tutor message back and forth,'' Broman said. ``At the end, the student can print out a copy of the entire tutoring session.''

The library has four computers in the Homework Center that are reserved just for children during prime homework hours, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Students, parents and teachers who would like to learn more about Live Homework Help are invited to attend an open house at 6 p.m. Jan. 26 where library personnel will demonstrate the new service.
