TURTLES' MARKETER HAS NEWEST SUCCESS IN ZEN INTERGALACTIC NINJA
NEW YORK, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- When Surge Entertainment introduced its newest property, Zen Intergalactic Ninja, at the 1992 Toy Fair here last week, the environmentally-friendly alien drew larger crowds than even the teen stars of Beverly Hills 90210, who were promoting toys of their own.
And as Zen was touching down on Fifth Avenue, the major trade publication, Toy & Hobby World, was positioning him as "the next Turtles" and an even "better ninja."
At the same time, the industry bible, Licensing Book, was calling him "a monster license".
Zen's growing popularity-- not to mention list of licensees--is testament to the marketing acumen of Mark Freedman, the thirtysomethingish licensing wunderkind behind the billion dollar-plus phenomenon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Not surprisingly, Surge was named 1991's Licensing Agency of the Year, and the Turtles the Property of the Year, by the Licensing Industry Manufacturer's Association (LIMA).
And now Surge has introduced Zen to the world, by granting the master toy license to Just Toys of New York--the new "hot" toy company helmed by Rose Evangelista, who this month is the subject of a feature story in Working Woman magazine.
Just Toys' Zen figures comprise its first line of fully articulated boy's action figures. The same was the case when Freedman granted the Turtles' license to then-small Playmates Toys of La Mirada, Calif. Today Playmates is considered an industry giant.
In addition to the toys, Zen already boasts a color comic-book published by the venerable Archie company, two different videogames coming shortly from software giant Konami, plus watches, posters, masks and so on.
Both the Hollywood Reporter and The New York Times have reported that Freedman is in the process of negotiating the Zen animated TV series, and a live-action movie. Several Hollywood producers have already made the trek to the Just Toys showroom, to see the Zen toys for the first time.
According to Freedman, "What we did for 'ninja' with Turtles, I think we're going to do for the environment with Zen."
