TURNER NAMED MAJOR CORPORATION OF THE YEAR BY
THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MINORITY CONTRACTORS
NEW YORK, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Turner Corporation (AMEX: TUR), the nation's leading general builder, has been selected for an unprecedented fifth time as the Major Corporation of the Year by the National Association of Minority Contractors (NAMC). The NAMC presents the award annually to the company that has shown the most interest and the best results in utilizing minority and women business enterprises throughout the country.
According to Ralph C. Thomas III, executive director of the NAMC, Turner was recognized "for its continued and significant utilization of minority construction contractors nationwide. Over the years," he continued, "(Turner) has not stabilized, but elevated its business relationships with minority contractors."
In 1991, Turner offices around the country awarded a total of 1,165 contracts to minority and women business enterprises. The total dollar volume of those contracts represented approximately $407.4 million, more than 15 percent of Turner's total volume of construction completed for the year. Joint ventures accounted for an additional $168.2 million.
In receiving the award, Hilton O. Smith, Turner's vice president of equal employment opportunity commented," I think the award is a testament to a fantastic team effort by people at all levels of the Turner organization. It's a tribute to the commitment of everyone from senior management, which continues to actively support the programs, to the staff who volunteer their own time to participate."
Turner's affirmative action programs have long been recognized as the best in the construction industry. The company's commitment to construction-related minority- and women-owned business enterprises can be traced as far back as 1969 when the company held its first construction management seminar. The seminars, which have become the cornerstone of Turner's affirmative action program, are offered free of charge to female and minority contractors and offer instruction on a wide range of subjects -- from estimating and purchasing to construction law and dealing with local municipalities. Since its inception, the program has been held in 28 cities and boasts approximately 4,000 graduates since its inception.
In the late 1980s, Turner initiated YouthForce 2000, a program designed to encourage children at all educational levels to stay in school and also to consider careers in the construction disciplines. Turner offices around the country participate in local Adopt-A-School programs, vocational curriculums, jobsite tours and a wide range of other activities aimed at students from elementary school through high school. The company also provides internships for high school seniors and college students through the Inroads, Inc. program and predominantly black colleges and universities.
Based in New York City, The Turner Corporation, through Turner Construction Company and other construction subsidiaries, is the nation's leading builder of commercial, industrial, retail, hospital and healthcare, institutional, government building and multi-unit housing projects. Operation through more than 35 offices, Turner has construction projects underway throughout the United States and abroad. During 1991, The Turner Corporation completed $2.7 billion of construction.
