 efforts to protect U.S. forces from terrorist attack. Under this follow-on production contract, called TASS II, all federal agencies can obtain TASS equipment and support worldwide. Two small business contractors will also compete to provide TASS equipment to the government.

Under this indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract, awarded Sept. 16, TRW is also responsible for providing training, installation, and integration of technological enhancement upgrades to keep the security system state of the art. AlliedSignal Technical Services, Columbia, Md., will support TRW in providing these services. Electronic Systems Center, Hanscom Air Force Base Hanscom Air Force Base, initially and briefly designated Bedford Army Air Base, is a U.S. Air Force facility in Bedford, Massachusetts. It is the headquarters of the Electronic Systems Center (ESC), one of the product centers of the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). , Massachusetts, is the contracting activity. Work is being performed at TRW's Carson facility.

TASS is a rapidly deployable electronic security system that detects, announces, locates, and evaluates possible intrusions that could pose a threat to personnel or facilities. The system offers a variety of sensors, annunciators, and thermal images that can be mixed in any combination to meet site-specific needs. Sensors (infrared, microwave, seismic, magnetic) can be powered by battery, base power, and/or solar panels and deployed in any quantity and mix. The need for improved force protection became more evident last year in June when 19 airmen were killed in a terrorist bombing at Khobar Towers, Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia (sä`dē ərā`bēə, sou`–, sô–), officially Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, kingdom (2005 est. pop. . The Air Force quickly awarded TRW a $47 million fixed price contract -- TASS I -- to build and deploy a tactical automated security system throughout the region. The first phase of TASS involved the manufacture, deployment, training, and support of TASS equipment to meet Air Force Base protection requirements.
