TRW Wins Software Development Contract to Help Army Simulate Wargames.

: TRW) won a $17 million follow-on contract from prime contractor Raytheon Company for further development and maintenance of the U.S. Army's Extended Air Defense TestBed (EADTB EADTB Extended Air Defense Testbed ).

The EADTB simulates potential air and missile defense scenarios to help military analysts learn the most effective response to future threats.

The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) is a specialized major command within the United States Army. The SMDC is an organization composed of five components:
  • SMDC Headquarters and the Force Development Integration Center in Redstone Arsenal, Alabama

 awarded a $42.5 million prime contract on July 30 to Raytheon for program management and system engineering. Total potential contract value from the Army is $200 million over 10 years. TRW has been the lead software development provider for this program since contract inception in 1989 and the major contributor in producing 2.2 million lines of code The statements and instructions that a programmer writes when creating a program. The EADTB offers a robust, user-flexible representation of C4I systems, weapon systems, and sensors for National Missile Defense National Missile Defense (NMD) as a generic term is a military strategy and associated systems to shield an entire country against incoming Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). The missiles could be intercepted by other missiles, or possibly by lasers.  and Theater Air and Missile Defense analyses. The EADTB offers a number of special capabilities and operates with variable detail that allows coverage of a range of simulation needs, including system engineering and analysis, operational analysis, and training support.

The project is based in Huntsville, Ala., where TRW employs more than 350 people with approximately 30 working directly on the EADTB contract.

TRW's Space & Missile Systems unit has facilities in Huntsville, Ala.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Ogden, Utah; San Bernadino, Calif.; and Fairfax, Va. The unit serves as prime integration contractor for the nation's ICBM program; provides the Battle Management Command, Control, and Communications system for the National Missile Defense program; and serves as the research and development, and operations and maintenance contractor for the Joint National Test Facility, the Department of Defense's premier modeling and simulation center in Colorado Springs, Colo. TRW has also formed a team to pursue the Integrated Space Command and Control (ISC2) program managed by the Air Force Space Command to be awarded in early 2000.
