TRW Sending Colorado Springs Students to `Space' for Summer Camp.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 1998--TRW (NYSE: TRW) is sending more than 60 middle school students to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., July 12 - 17. Among those to attend TRW Week at Space Camp will be four Colorado Springs-area students from Challenger Middle School Alex Kolyushiu, seventh grader; Coral Lynne Whale, seventh grader; Bond Livingston, eighth grader; and Steve Wolf, eighth grader.

Instead of roasting marshmallows and searching for scavenger hunt items, these summer campers will train on a low gravity chair, work as mission specialists in a simulated weightless environment, and conduct a simulated launch. Students also will explore the history of manned space flight, inspect the rocket engines that place space shuttles in orbit, and watch films of astronaut missions.

The Colorado Springs students will depart from Colorado Springs Airport July 11 and return July 17. Provided by the TRW Foundation on behalf of TRW Colorado Springs Engineering Operations, the full scholarships of approximately $1,500 each provide air fare, tuition, room and board, and a genuine NASA space uniform.

Children from 13 communities where TRW has operations were selected for scholarships based on financial need and academic potential. In addition to Colorado Springs, the locations are: Arlington, Fairfax, and Falls Church, Va.; Atlanta; Cleveland; Farmington Hills and Washington, Mich.; Fairborn, Ohio; Huntsville; Neath, West Glamorgan, South Wales; Rogersville, Tenn.; Redondo Beach, San Bernardino, and San Diego, Calif.

"We believe the Space Camp experience stimulates students about science and math in a way they've not known before and inspires them to achieve academic excellence," said Laura Johnson, TRW contributions manager. Improved math and science grades have been documented for camp participants.

TRW Week at U.S. Space Camp has been held since 1995 at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, one of Alabama's leading educational attractions. Joining the more than 50 scholarship recipients at the TRW week will be children of employees from various TRW locations around the world. For the children of its employees, TRW provides a 20-percent discount on the tuition portion of the expenses.
