"We're extremely proud of the contributions that Arnold Galloway has made over the last three decades to programs of national significance, to TRW and to his community," said Joanne Maguire, vice president for group development, TRW Space & Electronics Group. "He demonstrates the creative engineering skills, the positive attitude and the commitment to excellence that are the hallmarks of TRW's work force."

The Black Engineer of the Year Awards are presented annually to recognize and honor the technical and professional achievements of African-American men and women involved in engineering, science and technology fields.

Galloway holds a bachelor's degree, a master's and a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan (body, education) University of Michigan - A large cosmopolitan university in the Midwest USA. Over 50000 students are enrolled at the University of Michigan's three campuses. The students come from 50 states and over 100 foreign countries. . During his 31-year career at TRW, he has held various technical management positions in the field of systems engineering.

Systems engineering is a technical discipline pioneered by TRW that considers the top-level performance and cost requirements of an electronic system such as a satellite, then defines the optimum combination of technologies, hardware and software needed to meet those requirements.

As a systems engineer and project manager, Galloway has played significant roles in TRW's design, development and production of some of the nation's most important satellite systems, including the Defense Support Program, a constellation of satellites that provides the nation with early warning protection against ballistic missile launches.

He currently manages the Concurrent Engineering Center (CEC (Central Electronic Complex) The set of hardware that defines a mainframe, which includes the CPU(s), memory, channels, controllers and power supplies included in the box. Some CECs, such as IBM's Multiprise 2000 and 3000, include data storage devices as well. ) for TRW's SBIRS Low program, a follow-on to DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive . CEC provides a networked communications environment that enables secure, real-time sharing of engineering data among TRW's SBIRS Low integrated product teams. The SBIRS Low constellation of satellites will provide critical tracking information for ground-based missile defense systems.

In addition to his engineering responsibilities, Galloway is active in helping TRW identify and leverage the skills and experience of its other minority employees to improve the company's competitive position within the aerospace marketplace.

As the first chairman of TRW's African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  Task Group, a TRW employee networking organization, Galloway has led TRW's participation in key legislative events sponsored by Congressional Black Caucus Congressional Black Caucus, organization of African-American members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Founded in 1970, it addresses legislative concerns of African Americans and other minority citizens, such as employment, welfare reform, minority business .

In addition, he has served on TRW Space & Electronic Group's Affirmative Action affirmative action, in the United States, programs to overcome the effects of past societal discrimination by allocating jobs and resources to members of specific groups, such as minorities and women.  Advisory Committee, a volunteer group of ethnic minority employees chartered to evaluate the group's affirmative action program in Redondo Beach, Calif.

Galloway also gives his time generously to his own community.

In recent years, he has served as a science fair judge for Inglewood (Calif.) Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts. , worked with fellow TRW employees to renovate a local housing project, and helped promote TRW internships for students from the California Academy of Math & Science (CAMS), a four-year public high school affiliated with the Dominguez Hills campus of California State University Enrollment
.

Supported in part by high-tech companies like TRW, CAMS is committed to increasing the number and diversity of young people who make science and engineering their life's work.
